Are You Fast-Tracking on Aging?

Thursday, March 31st, 2005

Are you fast tracking on the “Never ending desire for a more youthful appearance”? See how you fare when answering the following questions:

Have you begun using muscle paralyzing injections before the age of 40?

Have you had plastic surgery somewhere on your body?

Do you constantly berate yourself regarding your appearance?

If you have answered “yes” to any of these questions, you are battling with Mother Nature.

Trying to look younger using chemicals, surgery, and injecting foreign substances that have no long-term testing is detrimental to your good health. The medical profession that deals in enhancement cannot possibly predict how their patients are going to react to these substances or procedures over a twenty or thirty year span.

Once you’ve decided that surgery or injections is your chosen modality to look younger, you have set yourself up for failure. Why? Because one injection is never enough – twenty injections over 2-3 years won’t be enough either and before you know it, ten years will have passed and your body is filled with toxic chemicals that may cause harm. And you still need more injections!

Same goes for surgery. Will one eye lift be enough? Will you constantly want to update your look using surgical techniques that contribute to an old looking face? Wait a minute you say! Isn’t surgery supposed to make one look younger? Yes, that’s the goal but more often than not, multiple surgeries make your face look like you’ve had multiple surgeries. The pulling and tweaking can produce a very freakish appearance, especially when fine lines and wrinkles are zapped by a laser.

The adage: “Aging Gracefully” has been replaced with carefully staged propaganda disguised as advertising in upscale magazines, TV and radio proclaiming that you need Botox, Restylane, and even surgery to look youthful.

This is a lie told by big companies who manufacture chemical and cadaver substances; the drug companies and the medical community have tons of money to sway your consciousness into believing this hype. They want you to become hooked on injections and surgery so they can continue to develop more and more substances for you to use. So what if there are deadly complications from over use?

“Over use” is big business and that is exactly what is hoped for no matter if too many injections equals repeat business. These repeat procedures equate to easy dollars for the medical community. And, there is little risk to them when they’re using injections to line their pockets; no large insurance premiums are required for non-surgical procedures. That’s one reason why Medi-Spas are prevalent in and adjacent to shopping malls and structures in high-traffic, high-dollar areas; there are no national standards in place to protect the consumer and they offer everything from facials to pharmaceutical injections and other medical procedures. The lure of the “lunch-time facial” with easy in and out can affect not only your appearance but your over-all health and wellbeing.

At some point, someone has to take a stand and say “Enough!” Taking control of your health means you must be willing to stop having frivolous surgery and multiple injections that paralyze and artificially plump up sagging facial features.

Taking back your power doesn’t mean you have to look old or dowdy. In fact, if you stop squandering money on needless procedures Mother Nature never intended you to use, you can actually treat the cause of aging in the face.

Most aging is caused by loose and flabby facial muscles; if you’re sporting a double chin, a wattle or hooded eyes, this is a result of muscles that are no longer strong and tight. If the apples in your cheeks sag even when you smile and your forehead droops into your upper eyes, do not be discouraged because you can actually exercise all the muscles in your face and neck. When you do this, your muscles will experience increased circulation, plumping the skin so that the face looks younger and fresher.

Using exercise techniques that are proven to lift and tone your face makes sense; there is no risk, it’s very affordable and instead of looking freakish, you just look like you did 10-15 years ago…wholesome and recognizable.

It is caused by the sebaceous glands making to much of the oily substances, that are then secreted on to the surface.
The glands of people with normal levels of blood, seem to especially sensitive to testosterone, a perfectly normal hormone. In people prone to acne, testosterone set off the sebaceous glands to make an excess of the oily substance sedum. The acne does not go any further in most people but in others this build up of oil in the hair follicle,is an ideal place for a bacterium called propionibacterium to grow. Fat Loss Exercise - 2 Fat Burning Tips to Make You Sexy

Thursday, March 31st, 2005

Finding the best way to achieve fat loss with exercise is something that a lot of people have a lot of trouble with.

Have you tried to lose fat with exercise but didn’t have any success? If this has been something you’ve experienced, then it is important for you to know that you probably weren’t exercising the right way to lose fat!

Here are what most people do to try and achieve fat loss with exercise:

-Do hundreds of crunches to lose fat around the midsection
-Do long bouts of time on a cardio machine
-Sporatically use the strength training machines after a cardio workout

Does this sound familiar? If so, then it is time that you learned how to use exercise to achieve fat loss once and for all.

The right way to lose fat with exercise does not involve any of the above mentioned methods.

Here is how to lose fat with exercise:

You ultimate is goal to for fat loss through exercise is to burn calories and increase your metabolism.

How to Lose Fat With: Cardio

99% of people do this the wrong way. They try to get on a cardio machine and go for 30-60 minutes in an effort to burn as many calories as possible. Does this work? Yes it does. The problem is that doing long bouts of “same speed” cardio does virtually nothing to raise your metabolism! On top of that, your body rapidly adapts to doing the same cardio workout over and over again. Soon, you have to go longer and harder to achieve the same benefit as when you started!

What Works: Use interval when doing cardio

Using intervals means that you use both high and low intensities. This is great for fat loss with exercise because the high intensity periods are what raises your metabolism so that you can burn calories for hours after you are done working out!

To use interval training, try using an exercise bike and going 2 minute slow followed by 1 minute fast. Repeat this 3-6 times and you have yourself a fat burning cardio routine that will burn lots of calories as well as crank up your metabolism!

How to Lose Fat With: Resistance Training

This is one of the most overlooked ways to achieve fat loss with exercise.

Instead of just using the strength training machines after doing cardio, try doing total body circuit training instead.

What Works: To put it simply, the more muscle you have the more calories you burn! Muscle uses stored body fat as fuel when it is primed to do so.

A great way to use resistance training for fat loss is by doing total body strength training workouts 2-3 times per week. By working your whole body, you will burn more calories and add more lean muscle mass.

Here is an example of what a total body workout for fat loss might look like:

1. Pushups

2. Lunges

3. Seated row

4. DB squats

5. Ab crunches on a stability ball

6. Leg curl on a stability ball

REPS: 10-12
ROTATIONS: 2-3
REST: 30-45 secs

Can you see how this type of workout really works your whole body? Remember, the more lean muscle mass you have the more fat loss you will see as a result!

First Symptoms of Menopause

Wednesday, March 30th, 2005

Normally, women experience the first symptoms of menopause during their late thirties and early forties. Menopause is a natural occurrence and a gradual transition occurring in every woman. Menopause is not any disease or illness but a total cessation of menstrual cycles for twelve months or more. Some women experience first symptoms of menopause earlier than other women do.

Early development of first symptoms of menopause could be due to higher stress levels, unhealthy lifestyle, lack of regular exercise, irregular eating patterns, insufficient consumption of healthy foods, etc. The most prominent first symptoms of menopause are irregular menstrual cycles. Menstrual flow during such period could be very high or extremely low.

While you experience the first symptoms of menopause, your menstrual cycles could occur frequently within a fortnight or sometimes, you miss your periods for over a full month too. There could be widening gap between menstrual periods overtime.

There is also no set limit over the menstrual flow, sometimes it could be for three to five days while sometimes it could continue for more than a week. The first symptoms of menopause could lead to total disruption in your regular and systematic menstrual cycles.

Other common first symptoms of menopause include tenderness in breasts, inability to handle stress, lapse of memory and other nervous problems like depression, anxiety, confusing thoughts, mood swings, etc. It is common to note the setting in of the first symptoms of menopause with a gain in your body weight. Your body tends to retain more water and you seem to bloat.

Changes in hormone levels in your body indicate the first symptoms of menopause. Such hormonal changes are often the cause for your low energy levels and a lower drive to face the challenges in life. In other words, you seem to lack sufficient interest in life. These hormonal changes are also the cause behind your sudden hot flashes, which are the most common first symptoms of menopause.

You experience such sudden hot flashes at any time, more often at night. There is no method to predict occurrence of these first symptoms of menopause. More than forty percent of women having regular menstrual cycles also experience such hot flashes in their forties. These are therefore a prelude to the first symptoms of menopause.

There is no particular time limit for occurrence of such hot flashes. Around eighty percent of women experience hot flashes for around five years while around ten percent of women experience it for ten years too. Although there is nothing to predict their occurrence or lapse, these first symptoms of menopause definitely decrease overtime.

Herbal and Natural Remedies for Common Tooth and Gum Ailments

Wednesday, March 30th, 2005

While you can best achieve and maintain good tooth and gum health naturally with a long-term preventative, holistic approach that combines herbs and other natural substances with a healthy diet, an effective daily oral-hygiene routine, and regular dental check-ups, for those times when you still experience tooth and gum discomforts or ailments, a wide variety of herbs can soothe the mouth, lessen the pain, and aid in healing the condition. If you are experiencing tooth and gum problems, the best first step is to begin and maintain a routine as described above (see my previous article, “Enhance Your Dental Health Naturally: A Holistic Approach to Herbs for Healthy Teeth and Gums” for a wealth of information and possibilities). In addition to your regular oral-hygiene routine, you can also apply specific herbal and natural treatments for all manner of tooth and gum ailments, ranging from bad breath and canker sores, to discomfort from dental procedures, to gum disease, toothaches and abscesses.

It is important to exercise care when using herbs. Some herbs can be toxic if used for too long or in too great amounts. In addition, the active ingredients in some herbs are not recommended for certain health conditions, and can react negatively with prescription medications or other remedies. It is therefore recommended, especially if you are pregnant or nursing, wish to treat a child, have special health conditions, or are taking prescription medications, that you research the remedies that interest you before using them, and consult a qualified professional if you have questions or doubts. For more severe tooth and gum ailments, it is recommended that you combine any at-home treatment with a trip to the dentist.

Bad Breath

In addition to good oral hygiene, you can also freshen your breath by chewing whole fennel seeds, clove buds, whole cinnamon bark pieces, peeled cardamom pods, or parsley leaves. A mouthwash containing rosemary, diluted essential oils of anise, cinnamon, fennel, peppermint, or tea tree essential oil, or teas made from basil, chocolate mint, fennel, juniper berries, lavender flowers, parsley, peppermint, pineapple sage flowers, rose petals, sage, or thyme and used as mouthwash, also improve the breath. If bad breath remains a problem, you can take chlorophyll capsules or acidophilus supplements, and drink parsley or wheatgrass juice daily. It also helps to eat apples and celery often, since they are natural breath fresheners. Eating a sprig of parsley or a small piece of lemon peel will freshen the breath after eating garlic. Although some texts advise against ingesting essential oils, others suggest that you can also drink a cup of peppermint tea or add two drops of anise, fennel or peppermint essential oil to a full glass of water before drinking it to freshen your breath.

Mouth Sores

Herbal and natural remedies can also soothe and heal mouth sores. Mouth sores are often linked to food allergies or nutritional deficiencies, especially of iron, vitamin B12 and folic acid, so good vitamin and mineral supplements help. Acidophilus taken internally and used as a mouth rinse also eases mouth sores. Since canker sores stem from the breakdown of connective tissue, the herb gotu kola, ingested daily as a tea, is an effective remedy since it heals connective tissue. Chamomile mouthwash treats mouth sores resulting from chemotherapy. Other good rinses for mouth sores are alum, Milk of Magnesia, and teas of marigold, sage, or chinchona bark. You can also apply myrrh gum powder directly to the sore. Licorice root, a strongly anti-inflammatory tissue healer, is considered the best remedy for mouth sores. You can apply a pinch of licorice-root powder directly to a sore, or suck on a lozenge of DGL (de-glycyrrhizinated licorice). Aloe vera also soothes sores in the mouth when applied directly. A mouthwash of chickweed, violet, or rockrose also soothes pain from mouth sores. You can rub tea-tree oil directly on a cold sore to promote healing; apply as soon as the developing sore begins to tingle. A salve of thyme, myrrh and goldenseal can treat mouth sores caused by oral herpes.

Sore and Receding Gums

You can massage certain essential oils directly into sore areas of gums. These include tea tree, clove, eucalyptus, evening primrose, summer savory and wintergreen oils. You can also rinse the mouth with fennel or chamomile tea, a mouthwash of goldenseal, marigold, sage or diluted tea-tree oil, or apply aloe vera or a naturally antibiotic ointment made of steeped red clover leaves and blossoms, directly to the gums. A preparation of myrrh, tea tree and peppermint essential oils in vodka or apple-cider vinegar can be massaged directly into the gums to strengthen them. A mixture of yerba mansa, echinacea root, myrrh tears and prickly ash bark, steeped in vodka or apple-cider vinegar and massaged into the gums after brushing, encourages regeneration of receding gum tissues. For more severe gum disease, packs containing ingredients such as turmeric, aloe, willow bark, licorice root, the antioxidant vitamin E, and powdered alum, wrapped together in gauze and placed in the corners of the mouth nightly, have been known in some cases to heal the condition in a just few months.

Toothaches

Applying a powder of blackened eggplant and salt directly to the tooth will lessen a toothache. Rinsing the mouth with hydrogen peroxide, chewing a clove bud, or even applying just plain salt to the tooth will also help. Saturating a cotton ball in an essential oil such as cayenne, clove, peppermint, summer savory, wintergreen, or tincture of hops, and placing it directly on the tooth will also ease toothaches in an emergency. Since a persistent toothache often signals a more severe condition, it is wise to visit the dentist when this symptom occurs.

Infections and Abscesses in the Mouth

Garlic, a natural antibiotic for bacterial and fungal infections, and immune system strengthener, helps heal mouth infections. Fresh oil of garlic or raw cloves are the most effective form, but you can also find odorless garlic extracts in health-food stores. A mouthwash of the horsetail herb or witch hazel also treats infections of the mouth and gums. The common weed dandelion, a blood purifier, as well as echinacea combined with myrrh and licorice root, and ointment of red clover leaves and flowers, are good treatments for mouth abscesses. A salve or ointment of sanicle, a powerfully antioxidant herb, can also heal septic wounds. In the event of an infection or abscess in the mouth, it is best to combine any at-home treatment with a trip to the dentist.

Healing After Dental Procedures

After a tooth extraction, gum surgery, or other dental procedures, you can apply annato-seed pulp to the area to enhance healing. The fresh tops of St. John’s wort (also known as shepherd’s purse) help stop any bleeding. A chamomile poultice reduces pain and swelling. Elderberry mouthwash following gum surgery or suture placement helps the gums to heal properly, preventing scars. Antibiotic red clover ointment, or marigold or yarrow mouthwash also enhance the healing process.

In spring and summer, gather daisies into bunches and bind the stems together with string. Hang them upside down in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. When they are quite dry, break off the heads into a dry clean container and discard the stems. To make a daisy tea, pour a cup of boiling water over one teaspoonful of dried daisy heads or three teaspoonfuls of fresh daisy heads and steep for ten minutes. Drink the daisy tea four times daily for relief from arthritis, rheumatism, summer coughs, to soothe diarrhoea and as a tonic for the liver.

Sulfur is found in all living organisms and has had some remarkable results with a number of diseases, including Rheumatoid Arthritis. Recently, it has come to light that we need more sulfur than calcium in our diet, and that a deficiency leads to stiff and painful joints. It is used to make collagen, the primary component of cartilage and connective tissue in bones, joints and skin. It is also in keratin, the tough substance in nails and hair. A lack of sulfur will lead to prematurely sagging and wrinkled skin. Methyl Sulfonyl Methane (MSM) is available in health food stores.

Garlic milk is known to benefit rheumatoid arthritis sufferers. Pour 500 ml milk into a saucepan with a quarter teaspoon of salt. Cut a whole unpeeled bulb of garlic in half, horizontally. Add the entire bulb and peel to the pan and simmer for approximately 15 minutes. Allow to stand for one minute before straining through a sieve. Squeeze the softened garlic through into the milk and stir. Discard the garlic skins. Sip through the day, or take a cupful morning and evening. Do not store overnight.

Boswellin (Boswellia Serrata) is an Ayurvedic remedy for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and joint inflammation. Figures quoted by a study of 175 sufferers say that 14 per cent rated it as excellent. 53 per cent found it was good, while 30 per cent said it was fair. Improvement is felt in two to four weeks.

Quick Tip for Runners Who Have Knee Pain

Tuesday, March 29th, 2005

Running with knees that hurt and are not getting better trough time is no fun, and being addicted to running doesn’t help either.

Fortunately, pain isn’t always a definite sign of tissue damage; instead it can be protective pain that is coming from entities called myofascial trigger points.

Pain from trigger points can feel like its coming from knee joint or patellae, while it’s actually coming from contraction knots in the quadriceps muscles.

What makes things quite enigmatic is that these knots can sometimes reside high in quadriceps muscles, far from where the actual pain symptom is felt.

It’s not uncommon for knee pain to be solely or partially muscular. It’s also common for doctors to overlook trigger points as a possible pain cause, because at this point there is no imaging equipment in use, which could verify their existence.

For now, only way to find out if trigger point are part of the pain equation, is manually palpating and searching for them from the muscles. There are not many doctors who do this, or know how to do this, or think that it’s even beneficial to do this.

Fortunately finding and treating trigger points is quite easy, and you don’t need an expert to do it for you.

You just find tender spots which refer pain to your knee when pressed, from those muscles that are reported to be involved in knee pains.

Usually, even a few days of self-massage to those points, can make them stop referring pain to your knee area. And make it evident that they where indeed behind the pain.

Finding and massaging trigger points in the quadriceps and calf muscles, and the small muscles behind the knee (plantaris & popliteus), should give you good results.

Everyone wants clear, impurities-free skin. Unfortunately, not all of
us were blessed to have the model- look beautiful skin that we always
wanted.

People are always bombarded with those various skin disorders and we
are always flocking to our drugstores to buy the latest miracle cure
for that naturally beautiful skin.

Some Facts:

Fact number one. The cosmetic industry makes billions of dollars from
the public quest for great skin. They use the money to advertise and
perpetuate their products. Do not be fooled by the hype.

Fact number two. There are many factors that contribute to the clogging
of pores: like dehydrated skin, improper cleansing, excessive oil
production, excessive build-up of dead skin cells, hormones, excessive
sweating, dirty work or play environments, genetics, makeup, fingers on
the face, allergic reactions, a diet high in sugar content and many others.

Fact number three. Most skin impurities are due to clogged pores, so the
best way to have that beautiful skin is to unclog your pores.

5 Steps to unclog your pores

Avoid oil-based products such as facial lotions, wash and cosmetics.
Look for products that are “non-comedogenic,” it means it will not clog
your pores.

Do not wear tight headband, baseball hat, and/or helmet when you exercise
or play sports, and make sure you wash the sweat-soaked things each time
you wear them.

Keep the skin hydrated and moist so your cells can function properly.
Moisturize your face with mild, non-comedogenic moisturizers to keep it
hydrated. Moisturizing is a necessity. Again, the product with the least
amount of chemical additives is the best. Always use a light moisturizer
on your face after cleansing.

Cleanse your pores with an toner or skin conditioner on cotton balls.
Do not try to scrub harshly or you will strip and damage your skin. Even
after rinsing your face, if you do not remove the remainder of cleanser and
loosened debris residues, you are only going to imbed that debris deeper
into the pores as you layer serums and moisturizers on top.

The absolute best way to perform this deep pore cleansing is with a salicylic
acid toner or skin conditioner on cotton balls. There’s no need to harm your
skin by vigorous scrubbing or harsh treatments, simply wipe with toner damp
cotton balls until the last cotton comes away perfectly white.

Astringents, Salicylic Acid, retinoic acids, and glycolic acids all work to
prevent pores from clogging. Be aware of some active ingredients like benzoyl
peroxide, these ingredients can cause major side effects.

So there, those are ultra easy steps to eliminate or lessen your problem,
start today. Beauty starts with your skin.
