African-American Hair - Tips To Obtain Semi-Relaxed, Healthy Curls

Sunday, April 30th, 2006

While it can be difficult to manage, African-American hair is extremely versatile in terms of being able to achieve a wide variety of hairstyles. For many women, the ideal style is a semi-relaxed, loose curl that still has plenty of body and moisture and is not dried out or dulled by harsh hair products.

Here are some tips for keeping African-American hair soft, loose, manageable and healthy-looking:

1. The bottom line for soft, healthy black hair is moisture. Start by moisturizing your hair from the inside. Drink lots of water!

2. Select the right shampoo, using one that’s moisture rich and detangles while cleansing without stripping the hair of all its natural oils. Also - don’t over-shampoo which can strip hair of moisture. Wash your hair no more often than every week to week and a half. And shampoo only once, never twice.

3. Be sure that shampoo is completely rinsed out before conditioning, and be patient - leave conditioner in for several minutes to help moisturize your hair. Hop out of the shower and cover your hair with a towel or shower cap while you organize your jewelry or makeup tray or take off old nail polish, just so you are not tempted to shorten the moisturizing time.

4. Try hemp-based moisturizers on your hair, such as Malibu’s Hemp Moisturizer for Dry Skin, as a moisturizer for hair also.

5. After rinsing out the conditioner, towel dry and add natural plant oils back into your hair, such as grapeseed oil, almond oil or a very light application of virgin olive oil. Use your palms to spread one of these shine-enhancing oils evenly through your hair and then comb or brush your hair to assure the ends are also moisturized.

6. Apply a gentle straightening product such as Curlaway® Relaxing Gel, which is natural and semi-permanent. As Curlaway relaxes curl is also moisturizes with plant oils, Vitamin B-5 (panthenol) and MSM. Unlike alkaline, quick-acting relaxers, Curlaway Gel can be used on chemically straightened, permed or colored hair, which permits highlights or even a shade change.

7. All heating appliances can dry and damage hair. It’s better to use a mid-range setting and best to let hair dry naturally pulled tightly on rollers. Ironing your hair while it is damp or slightly damp can cause severe breakage and damage.

8. For sleek, romantic waves, set your hair with large rollers or use narrow rollers for sexy, bouncing ringlets.

9. For the tousled, casual look, use a medium barrel curling wand and let the curls fall where they may.

10. After using rollers under a dryer bonnet or air-drying naturally, running your fingers through your hair a few times after you are done straightening will help smooth out your hair, and achieve a natural look.

11. To keep great volume, use a flatiron only on the top layers and the front to achieve a frizz-free, smooth look, while the curlier hair underneath pumps up the volume.

12. Find a style that works with your natural hair type and growth pattern, and don’t over-relax your hair until it is bone straight, strawlike and life-less without body or curl. Show off your curls! Try to work with your hair and not against it.

13. Eat a balanced, HEALTHY diet rich in fruits, vegetables and protein and your hair will grow faster and healthier, as well.

The bottom line is, to have healthy-looking, semi-relaxed hair use gentle relaxers and shampoos, lots of moisturizing, and avoid too much heat.

Curlaway Relaxing Gel can be purchased at Walgreens if not on the shelf, ask them to order it for you and directly from Xenna Corporation online at curlaway.com curlaway.com or 800-368-6003

Malibu Hemp Moisturizer is available in the hair care section at Wal-Mart.

Creating Your Own Workout Program

No Need For Personal Trainers…Create Your Own Workout
Program

I am frustrated with the info given out by most personal trainers.
Honestly, they seem to use a cookie cutter workout program, which they believe
will work for everyone. I think for a beginner, there is some value in having a
personal trainer…I just think that once you get the basics down, you are
better served to come out with your own workout program. Designing a workout
program is actually much easier than most people think.

Step number one: List your specific goals and chose a role
model.

If you are looking to lose bodyfat, then you are going
to want to focus a lot of your workout program on cardio. If you are looking to
gain muscle size, then it makes sense to spend a large percentage of your
workout program focusing on lifting weights. I think it helps to find a role
model. My personal role model is Brad Pitt in Fight Club. In that movie he is
very lean and compact. I have developed my workout program in a way that
maximizes fat loss, so 75% of my workout is on cardio and 25% lifting weights.
This workout program allows me to maintain a very lean look year round.

Step number two: Decide how much time you are going to devote to
exercise.

In designing your workout program, you are going to
have to figure out how many days you will be able to workout. Contrary to
popular opinion, I think you do need to workout 4-5 days minimum to achieve
great results. Many personal trainers have their clients perform workout
programs 3 days per week. The body was meant to get daily exercise. The people
in the best shape I know perform at least some exercise every day. If you have
7-8 total hours to devote to a workout program, you will get better results
spreading those 8 hours over 6-7 days -vs.- having three 2-hour workouts. As an
example….Matthew McConaughey simply tries to work up a sweat for at least one
hour every day. That is a simple workout program that obviously gets great
results.

Step Three: Pick exercises that are right for you.

What I typically see is the trainer taking every
person through the exact same workout program, regardless of their body type. I
also have head people complaining that a certain exercise hurts them. The
problem is that the personal trainer simply can’t get into your head and know
what the exercise feels like to you. For instance, I have a spinal injury so I
have to avoid any type of crunch exercise in my workout program. Only you know
how a certain exercise feels to you. I use a lot of dumbbells in my workout
program, since I can really feel them working my muscle. If I was a personal
trainer I would probably design workout programs for my clients using dumbbell
exercises. This would be a big mistake, since many people get a better workout
using barbells or machines.

Step Four: Educate yourself about fitness.

My advice is to educate yourself using the Internet
and then come up with your own workout program that is perfect for you. Not only
will you experience greater results, you will save time and money getting to
your goals. There are several great resources online which will help you create
your ideal body. Finding a really good e-book will cost less than the price of
one session with a personal trainer. In no time flat you can easily design a
solid workout program and fine tune it over time.

Stop Acne Now!

Sunday, April 30th, 2006

Acne is a terrible scurge, afflicting people in every age group. Acne primarily affects teens and adolescents and can cause long lasting physical and emotional scars. For years we have either learned to deal with our acne, or spent thousands of dollars with dermatologists or on useless as seen on tv products we have seen (like Proactive). Currently there are two treatments that do work and one is actually cost effective. It is now a fact that acne can be treated, controlled and even cured.

We must become more educated on what acne is and whqat does and does not cause it. Acne is an inflammation of the skin that is caused by overproduction of sebum (oil) from our sbaceous glands and a low skin pH (acidity) that make ideal conditions for bacteria. This bacteria clogs the pores and causes pimples and deeper inflammed bumps and postules (acne). Acne is genetic as it is first started by the overproduction of oil and acidity levels. Chocolate and sugary items don’t cause it.

Accutane (can only be prescribed) works by greatly reducing the production of sebum. This reduction in sebum will make the skin very dry and does have some bad side effects like possible liver damage and such so it is available only through your dermatologist and is used as a drastic or last measure. Basically it brings out all the acne you will have in the next 2-3 years all at once over the first 2 months and then it is all gone. The first 2 months are rough, however - I had this treatment.

TCA peels are a more affordable and less drastic alternative. TCA peels work by cleansing the skin, increasing the pH or acidity of the skin making it unfavorable for bacteris, and increasing the rate of skin regeneration thus hastening the healing process. TCA Peels work 1,000 times better than any overrated peroxide wash or cleansing system and have similar results to Accutane without any of the harsh side effects. They have been rated as one of the best at home products / treatments available. This has been proven on millions of patients - why else would every dermatologist and plastic surgeon offer TCA peels?

So, basically, you can either live with the scurge of acne or treat it. TCA peels are the most cost effective and least harmful solution to acne and can now be purchased directly instead of through your doctor for tremendous savings.

What Causes ADHD?

Sunday, April 30th, 2006

There are a lot of complicated and complex studies about what causes ADHD, and a lot of folk lore and popular theories.

There are also some basic facts about what does appear to cause ADHD and what doesn’t.

Environmental factors: It appears that tobacco and alcohol use by expectant mothers can cause a higher risk of ADHD in offspring. There is also evidence that high levels of lead may be related to ADHD in children.

Brain injury: One early theory was that attention disorders were caused by brain injury. Some children who have suffered accidents leading to brain injury may show some signs of behavior similar to that of ADHD, but only a small percentage of children with ADHD have been found ot have suffered a traumatic brain injury.

Food additives and sugar: While it is popular to think sugar causes or exacerbates ADHD, this does not seem to be true. In 1982, the National Institutes of Health held a scientific consensus conference on this issue and found that diet restrictions helped about 5 percent of children with ADHD, mostly young children who had food allergies.

Genetics: ADHD runs in family, so there are likely to be genetic influences, but no one knows exactly what those are.

In short, no one really knows what causes ADHD most of the time, but there are some factors, such as prenatal alcohol and tobacco consumption and genetic predisposition, that seem to increase a child’s likelihood of having ADHD.

Information from this article comes from the National Institute of Mental Health Report “Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.”

Use Right Acne Products, Medicine And Treatments To Cure Your Acne

Saturday, April 29th, 2006

History tells us that evolution is far better than revolution! When we talk and decide about medicines that treat acne, we have to keep aside our emotions, for acne is a emotional subject, which touches the patient’s psychological tissues, very painfully. You are likely to be carried away by the attractive labels and full page advertisements, “Want beautiful skin?”-as if it is stored in shelves and you have to only tell the number of yards of skin that you require!

The so-called premium products designed to treat and prevent acne need a careful scrutiny. Always remember, your acne problem is YOUR problem. Never make the mistake of comparing it with the neighbor’s acne problem. If no two individuals are alike, how can their skins be alike? It is you who have to decide, whether a particular medicine will work for you or not. A dermatologist has a major role to play in the acne drama, but you are the producer-director. You perhaps produced acne due to your wrong living and you better direct it and bring it to a happy ending!

What is acne after all? It is an inflammatory skin disorder of the skin’s sebaceous glands and hair follicies. Are you aware that the skin breathes! If the pores become clogged, the microbes that are involved in cause acne flourish and then you get pimples, blackheads and often inflammation. It is possible to clear pimples and blackheads with proper remedies.

The post-inflammatory changes caused by acne are part of the skin’s natural healing process. There are certain practices and medicines that can help facilitate their healing process. Using tretinoin (Retin-A, Renova, Avita) speeds up the skin’s remodeling process and helps heal post-inflammatory changes.

Renewing cleanser gently exfoliates dead skin cells allowing benzoyl peroxide to penetrate pores. It is all about protecting your skin from forming new bacteria that cause the breakouts!

The most common agents to treat acne are the antibiotics, though not the safest! Side-effects and reactions can not be ruled out. Soaps, lotions, gels and creams are a matter of choice. Careful selection is the rule!

Rub garlic over the pimples and they would vanish without leaving a trace. Do it a number of times in a day. Garlic has cured very tough forms of acne cases, wherein the sufferers had thought that it is incurable and they are supposed to live with the scars forever. It is the external use of garlic that matters to finish off the presence of boils, pimples and spots on the skin. Garlic purifies blood, when you take it orally. Make garlic a regular part of your food and it will provide solid support to the skin to remain in the original condition. Also, it will keep the infections at bay.

So, for every minor acne problem, you need not visit the dermatologist. Only you should be sure of the merits of the medicines you take, and with right type of living, in co-operation with the Nature! Even then, say Hello to the dermatologist on the eve of New Year! You may still need his advice for some stubborn acne!

Fitness

Saturday, April 29th, 2006

So many things contribute to our physical fitness or lack of it. There’s diet, exercise, body fat ratios, vitamins and nutritional supplements. In addition, there are the health issues we may have and how we choose to address them, whether it be through allopathic medicine or alternative health choices.

Diets abound in our world. You will probably find that you cannot diet and then go back to your old ways of eating and living and expect to maintain your weight loss. To really keep those changes you worked so hard for, you’re going to have to change how you eat for the rest of your life. You will probably need to include some kind of exercise, too.

You can exercise for strength, flexibility and stamina, as well as for more specific goals. Talk to a personal trainer for details and to set up a personal program. Different programs will contribute more to different goals. Myself, I like Yoga for my exercise program. I have yoga videos from www.gaiam.com Gaiam.com for about 8 different goals, including strength, flexibility and relaxation, as well as a morning yoga, evening yoga and a yoga video for stress release. Of course, walking is great exercise that almost anyone can do. Swimming is another one. You need a little training, but almost anyone can get some good exercise in a swimming pool.

It’s good to keep an eye on that body fat ratio. I didn’t totally understand this one until I did some research and asked my doctor some questions. One good article is at weightlossresources.co.uk/body_weight/body_fat/percentage.htm Weightlossresources.com. It tells you the different ways to measure body fat and gives some guidelines about what percentages are acceptable for your age, height and weight. Check into that. It’s helpful.

Vitamins and nutritional supplements come in all sorts of combinations. You will want to consult with your own health professional for what you need. I did a hair mineral analysis to find out what sorts of minerals my body needed. I got a print out with detailed information on my mineral needs from just a sample of my hair!

Whatever fitness needs you have, be sure to investigate your options and make informed choices. Compare allopathic and natural paths. Be open to simple solutions like diet and exercise, if that is appropriate for you. Our bodies can take a lot, and we seem to be inclined toward health. So, maximize your good health with a well thought out fitness plan that’s right for you!

The Eyes Have It

Saturday, April 29th, 2006

After the age of 40, eye lids show signs of atrophy; in fact, the truth is that at 40, aging is affecting just more than eye lids. Eye brows are drooping and crows’ feet are becoming apparent. The under eye is showing wear and tear too; deep lines, puffiness, hollowness are all glaring signs of aging.

The booming men and women of today know how important it is to be secure with the fact that we are who we are – souls of the world embracing all life has to offer.

This includes learning to be secure with who we are on the outside too. We want to be genuine, not superficial or plastic in our appearance and we want to put our best face forward so that we are recognized and complimented for our winning ways and self-confidence.

Looking in the mirror and seeing tired, hooded eyes, crows’ feet and droopy eyebrows can send the normal person over the edge, dialing 911 for a plastic surgeon to remedy the situation. Oh sure, that’s the “easy” way out. Surgery – cutting – scarring – pain – disappointment – pain – recovery time – pain – risk - infection – slow healing - and the list can go on and on. Surgery is not easy.

The media have been very proficient at keeping everyone abreast of the newest tricks (surgery/injections/strings) performed by plastic surgeons. The media have contributed to the $60 million plus spent on eye procedures in 2005; that’s right, over 200,000 people shelled out $3,000 to $5,000 to plastic surgeons to temporarily lift the brow and tweak the upper and lower lids.

These costly, risky procedures can be replaced with exercise. That’s right! Using one or two exercises can shorten, lift and tighten the very muscles doctors are cutting then suturing.

Surgery is temporary because even though the muscles have been cut and sutured into the desired position, they are going to continue to atrophy and elongate unless you exercise them. If you choose not to exercise the brows and forehead to maintain the surgical lift, you will soon see that another surgery is in your future.

Exercise is far superior to elective cosmetic eye surgery because there is no risk. Take risk, pain, bruising, blurred vision, big expense and disappointment out of the equation. Results begin immediately and continue daily as long as you spend 35 seconds a day exercising your brows and upper eyes.

Exercise is beneficial for everyone and what a terrific deterrent to looking old when you begin exercising your face before aging is apparent. Facial fitness is just as important as mental fitness, physical fitness and spiritual fitness.

Your face, the part of your body that resonates who you are is your power suit and when you look pretty and healthy, your confidence shows. Improving our appearance is age old and looking good impacts our daily lives whether we work at home or meet people daily through our life experiences. We know that when we feel good about ourselves, we are happier, more productive and life just seems easier.

Bottom line: If you look in the mirror and see a tired face looking back at you, just know that help is as close as your fingertips.

Organic And Natural Skin Care Products Exposed

Saturday, April 29th, 2006

Through the years, the use of chemicals and synthetic ingredients in skin care and cosmetics raised serious health concerns in a large percentage of the population.

At the present time, there is an increasing demand for pure, natural and organic products for skin care and cosmetics. This is a beneficial stage of our healthy life style and skin care routine, which can provide long term skin care without side effects.

Many Companies are trying to compete to each, other to fulfill this increasing demand. There is also a high competition between those Companies to be number one concerning the safety of these products. This is a really difficult assignment, which sometimes make them improvise statements regarding the ingredients they are using in the preparation of those products.

For example some companies are listing only active ingredients under the name of ingredients omitting the questionable and chemical parts. In fact, preservatives and “other ingredients” used are the real issue for the safety of skin care products and this information is often omitted.

Because this particular field of skin care is relatively new, customers are not fully informed about what is hidden behind the so called “natural and organic” skin care products.

Due to my experience and expertise I found some very misleading information or lack of information regarding natural and organic skin care products. I believe that the consumer of natural and organic skin care and cosmetic products has the right to be informed.

The following are some of the important information which is not widely available to the public:

You cannot provide an organic or natural product made with oils and herbal extracts unless you are using an emulsifying agent. Oils and aqueous (H2O) solutions do not blend with each other.

You cannot use bees wax as an emulsifier unless you use borax, which is a chemical. These ingredients are usually omitted on labels.

You cannot preserve natural or organic skin care products with only Grapefruit seed extract, because this is appropriate for fungi and possible yeast and doesn’t work for gram positive and gram negative bacteria.

You cannot preserve natural or organic skin care products only with citric acid or citric like ingredients unless pH (the acidic or base capability of a solution) falls below 5 (acidic), which is not recommended for the skin.

You cannot preserve the natural and organic skin care products with only Rosemary oleoresin extract, which is widely used in formulations due to its appealing natural name.

Companies which make those statements regarding the preservation of their natural skin care or cosmetic products may have difficulties with the self life of their products or they are deliberately omitting ingredients from their ingredients list.

Some companies advertise under organic or natural, skin care products, which contain only a low percentage of plant extracts or natural oils. In fact, the products are chemical and synthetic with one or few natural active ingredients.

It is not in the benefit of the consumer to be uninformed. Most consumers have chosen natural skin care alternatives due to sensitive skin, allergies to various chemicals or are cancer patients, which exclude all the chemicals from their every day life for their own benefit. In addition, there are many people who have chosen organic skin care products for their pure and non harmful content.

An organic and natural skin care Company has to be loyal to consumers and be trustworthy. Sooner or later consumers will find what is hiding under an “appealing” list of ingredients or a nice advertising campaign.

Conclusion: You as a consumer have the right to ask as many questions as you consider necessary to make sure that nothing is hidden from you under the so called ingredients list.

If you decide to try an organic or natural skin care product do your home work. Look beyond the fancy advertising and be aware of any company which is listing only herbs and oils for your convenience.

Most important get to know what you are buying!

Understanding Aging Skin and Wrinkles

Friday, April 28th, 2006

We’ve all seen the pictures of elderly men and women whose skin shows the wear and tear of aging. While wrinkles may be considered a sign of wisdom and experience, most of us would rather not have them. Wrinkles may look cute and cuddly on a Sharpei but they aren’t so appealing for those of us who have to look at ourselves in the mirror on a daily basis.

Wrinkles and other signs of aging can appear just about anywhere on the human body however; they tend to be more prevalent in areas that have had extensive exposure to the sun. The most common breading grounds for wrinkles tend to be the face, hands, forearms, and neck. There are several categories of skin wrinkles including fine lines, surface lines, and deep furrows. Anti wrinkle treatments are generally most effective on fine lines. Deep creases typically require more drastic measures to correct.

So what causes wrinkles anyway? Wrinkles tend to develop with age as skin looses Elastin or the fibers that give skin its elastic quality and help to hold in moisture. The loss of Elastin along with a protein called Collagen in the middle layer of human skin (Dermis) allows the skin to gradually become thinner and begin to sag. There are a variety of contributing factors including exposure to the sun, smoking, heredity, and skin type. Some of these factors such as heredity and skin type are currently beyond our control forcing us to focus on those areas where we can make an impact. First and foremost; do not smoke. Smoking has been proven to increase wear and tear on the skin and lead to premature signs of aging. If you are currently a smoker; quit. It’s never too late to start making the right decisions and to begin promoting healthy skin. Second, avoid excessive exposure to the sun. Ultraviolet light is known to be damaging to the skin and can speed the aging process. This includes self tanning parlors where users are exposed to concentrated UV light for even short to moderate periods of time. When you are going to be outdoors, be sure to protect your skin with a sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least a 15. Be sure to reapply often if your plans include swimming or exercise.

OK, that’s all fine and dandy you say but “What can I do about the wrinkles I already have?” There are several potential solutions available ranging from painful injections and complicated cosmetic surgeries to topical creams and moisturizers that can help reduce the appearance of existing wrinkles. Anyone considering cosmetic treatments for existing wrinkles should consult a medical professional so that they may be informed about the risks and expenses involved with cosmetic surgery. For those of you who may be looking for less painful and less expensive alternatives, there are still many viable options. Keeping your skin clean and moist is perhaps one of the easiest and least expensive actions you can take to reduce the appearance of fine lines. Staying properly hydrated is another important aspect of proper skin care. Following these simple steps can help keep the signs of aging in check. If you would like to go a step beyond basic skin care to go on the offensive against wrinkles, you may want to look into some of the newer topical facial creams that have come on the market. Some of the very best ones are listed in medical publications such as the Physicians Desk Reference and have clinical trial data to back up their results. Many products on the market will claim to reduce wrinkles but you must seek out products that can support their claims.

Eczema Natural Treatment For Children - Probiotics

Friday, April 28th, 2006

A lot of studies have been conducted in Europe to determine just how effective probiotics are for children with eczema. It is unfortunate that those doctors who practice conventional medicine do not trust these studies but instead state that they are limited and that they do not deserve much support. Still, there are several naturopathic doctors that recommend using probiotics as an eczema natural treatment for your children.

Young children, including infants and toddlers, belong to a high risk group to developing eczema. Eczema is a type of skin disease that can cause skin reddening, inflammation and constant itching. In worst cases, skin can appear to be flaky. A recent study shows that 65% of the people with eczema are under 1-year-old and 90% of children will have a case of eczema before they are 5-years-old.

Parents would often not know what to do and how to go about helping their child with eczema as he or she can be constantly itching and in pain. A kid I came across would often strip himself throughout the day as he needed to scratch badly and find that his clothes are hindering him to scratch to his heart’s content.

Probiotics are microbial organisms that protect and live in the digestive tract. Probiotic bacterial cultures are intended to assist the body’s naturally occuring gut flora to rebalance themselves. They can stop the growth of bad bacteria, thus strengthening one’s immune system. Some people theorize that eczema is related to being exposed to bad bacteria during the early years of childhood. If so, naturopathic doctors say that probiotics can effectively prevent eczema because it can fight and counter the spread of bad bacteria throughout the body.

Eczema may possibly be related to food allergens. Adding probiotic to your kid’s diet can strengthen his digestive system and protect it against bad bacteria. This will help to balance the ratio of good and bad bacteria in the body, thus reducing a person’s risk of developing eczema.

Good sources of probiotic for eczema includes yogurt, buttermilk, miso, kim chi and other fermented foods and products. Make sure that your children eat more of these type of foods.

Of course, you should always check with your doctor about whether he recommends probiotics for your child with eczema. It will also be useful that you keep yourself updated on the latest research on supplementing eczema patients with probiotics. Probiotics for eczema can also be taken in supplement form.
