Hearing Impaired in the Workplace

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

Being hearing impaired can be a real challenge in the workplace. The biggest problem is that few understand the problem, and usually the person with the hearing impairment is hesitative to admit the fact.

When in one on one situation things may be just fine, especially there is little background noise. In a crowd situation the hearing impaired person may hear, but not understand, 50% or more of what is said. It can be very frustrating in meetings etc.

Sound is made up of Frequency and Volume measured in decibels. In the ear that sound is converted to electrical impulses to the brain. Many things can happen to keep the sound from reaching the brain.

Say some one says the letter “A”. That “A” is made of the frequency determined by that person’s voice box and the loudness that he speaks. That sound goes out into the room and mixes with the noise in the room. A person with normal hearing in both ears has little problem understanding the letter “A”.

But a person that has hearing in one ear only, cannot determine where that sound comes from. And the brain has to work twice as hard to process that sound.

It is a matter of information. With two ears twice the information available to the brain.

Same with someone that has a hearing loss the percentage of hearing loss, for whatever reason, reduces the amount of information available to the brain to process.

A normal ear may process the sound of the letter “A” with this much information, 0110110110011011 to the brain while the damaged ear may only send this much, ——11011———, so the brain has to look for more clues as to what that information really represents.

If you will notice a person with hearing loss does everything possible to gather clues or information to help in the hearing process. Some of the things are:

Looking at your face or lips while you talk.

Turning their head so that the good ear is facing the speaker

Cupping the ear with the hand

Remember even a hearing aid does not work as well as a normal functioning ear.

I hope this helps you understand what the loss of hearing really is.

The Miracle Wrinkle Blaster

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

You get up one morning and look in the mirror. Gasp! You look ten years older today than you did yesterday. The wrinkles have set in something furious overnight. Grabbing your moisturizing cream you completely slather your face with it and go about your morning routine only to find when you return to the mirror that the cream didn’t do much for you. Before you panic or decide that life as you know it has taken a quick one way path to premature old age, just take it as a warning and relax. Much of the “overnight prune” syndrome can be fixed easily without a lot of expensive or lengthy treatment.

Before you do anything, take time to study your face in the mirror. The areas that look bad are the areas you should pay close attention to in your daily care routines. Now that you have that information, it’s time to fix the damage. How your skin can degenerate so badly overnight isn’t usually a complicated question either. You may have already noticed that some days you look a lot younger and healthier than others. The explanation is almost always very simple. You are dehydrated.

While the statistics vary a percent or two, they all concur that your body is over 90% water. Water keeps you cells plump and healthy. It allows toxins and wastes to be removed into the blood stream and filtered from the body and aids in the absorption of nutrients and oxygen. If you don’t have enough of this vital fluid in your system your cells shrivel and your skin becomes wrinkled and leathery. When this happens you also have cells being damaged by poisons that are not being washed away from them and nutrients not getting into them.

Dehydration can be confusing because you won’t always feel thirsty when you are dehydrating. By the time you do feel thirst, your skin is already on its way to shriveling. Thirst does not come before dehydration; it is a symptom that tells you that you are dehydrated. Once you feel thirst, you have already got some catching up to do. Dehydration can also give false signals of hunger rather than thirst. If you are eating normally and seem to be continually hungry what you actually may need is a big glass of fresh clear water. Put down your fork and pour your self a nice pure glass of non-calorie remedy.

As a rule of thumb you should be normally getting a half ounce of water per day per pound of weight. There are factors that will increase your need, such as exercise, altitude, heat, fever, and even drinking alcohol. If you aren’t sure if you are drinking enough liquid, watch your face and hands. Your skin will tell you if you are getting enough. If you didn’t get enough water during the day you will continue to dehydrate through your sleeping hours. When you wake up you will then get the shock of your life when you look in the mirror.

If you do wake up shriveled, give yourself a twenty ounce glass of water. Water without chlorine and fluoride is best if you have access, and you always should. Drink that glass quickly then refill it and carry the second glass with you while you attend to your morning routine. Keep the glass with you. You will drink it if it is there. When that glass is near empty, refill it. Repeat that as often as you can manage without allowing yourself to feel bloated or sick. It is possible to drink too fast and your body will quickly tell you when you are doing so by causing discomfort. If you are already dehydrated, however, the normal half ounce per pound will not be enough to bring you back to proper hydration so don’t stop just because you have had you “quota” for the day.

After a glass or two of just plain water you might want to drink a glass of organic milk, soy milk, juice, or tea between glasses of water. These liquids are all skin food and will nourish your cells while hydrating your body. Dehydration can deplete nutrition in the cells so a glass of orange juice with added calcium is a treat not only for your taste buds but for your skin as well. Do make sure that you drink mostly water throughout the day, though, as your body needs it’s pure liquid attribute just as much as it needs other nutrients.

When dehydrated you need to take special care to stay away from coffee and soda pops or other liquids containing caffeine and sugar. While a cup of coffee might not hurt now and then in normal circumstances, while you are dehydrated you should steer clear of it. Soda pop should be avoided at all costs whether you are dehydrated or not. Your body recognizes carbon as waste and too much of that in your bloodstream will overload your immune system as your blood cells concentrate on removing it from your body. Alcohol, too, particularly wine, has argument for it’s health benefits in small doses, but when dehydrated it is the last thing you should be drinking. Alcohol will dry you out rapidly. It only takes a few hours to see the effects of alcohol on your skin.

If you are continuously sipping water and a few skin fluids during the day you will start to see your skin becoming supple and smooth again. If the dehydration was allowed to get far enough it will take a little longer to reverse it, but it will reverse if you just keep the liquid going down. After a few terrifying wake up calls and seeing how water reverses the damage, you won’t need much coaching to be reminded to keep a glass of water with you as you go about your day.

8 Bodybuilding Tips to Build Muscle

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006

The 8 Bodybuilding tips capture the essence of what is required to build muscle. There are far too many complex methods out there all claiming to be the answer to your prayers.

Between 1930 and 1950 the smart scientists had already worked out a process to build muscle. They may not have know the minutiae but they knew the process. Then technology came along and confused things for a while. With more and more focus on natural bodybuilding the old processes have become popular again. They also work quite well.

Here are the eight tips you need to keep in mind when bodybuilding:

1. Eat enough calories. You need to consume more that you use calorie wise. If you don’t you will simply lose weight and not gain any muscle. This follows the First Law of Thermodynamics. Basically if you want to gain weight you need to eat more, and if you want to lose weight you eat less than you body uses.

2. Consume the right foods. You need to eat a balanced diet. Your body needs proteins, carbohydrates and fats. So don’t go cutting any of them out. A balance of 40% protein, 40% carbohydrates and 20% fats is about right.

3. Drink loads of water. Your body is 80% water and you cannot live without it… make sure you drink loads and don’t ever be dehydrated. Being dehydrated will affect muscle growth.

4. Keep a detailed log of your workouts. The big secret to building muscle is progression. Ever tried to remember what weight you lifted last week?

5. Be prepared to train hard. Building muscle is hard work and not for the feint hearted. Its work so get to it already.

6. Avoid over training lest you wake the muscle eating monster. It is true. If you over train then the body needs to find quality energy to support the workout. And guess where the best energy is going to come from. Yes the proteins in those great muscles you are trying to build.

7. Don’t count on those magic supplements. There are a gazillion supplements out there. You simply don’t need them. If you want to supplement use whey protein and Creatine. Give the rest a miss. Check with your doctor first of course.

8. Inner drive and focus. This applies to everything you do in life. Focus and belief equal success.

So that concludes the all the bodybuilding tips you need to know to get started.

Disabilities Stuttering

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006

There are many types of disablity. Would people class stuttering as a disability?

I think most people would probably say no, however I disagree. People who stutter have to struggle their way through life at times.
I am somebody who had a stutter for eighteen years. I am going to now explain one of the situations that I found difficult and how my mind or what I would call my demons would be saying to me.

This is when trying to meet and approach people of the opposite sex.
Lets say I am in a bar and I see a woman/girl who catches my eye. I think to myself, who don’t you go and talk to her and make a move etc?
My demons are always talking to me, and are basically saying
“She won’t want to know you.

You have a stutter and when you start talking she will hear it.
Do you really think she will want to date somebody who has a stutter?
Even if she is interested, you then have to possibly meet her friends and family.

How will they find you and treat you, when they realise you have a stutter?”
These demons would make me think twice and more often than not I would not even bother going over and talking to the person. I would therefore let the demons win.

This is one example of thousands where the stutter handicaps your ability to live a normal life. This is why I believe stuttering is a disability.

Are Kelp Benefits Good for Every Hypothyroid Person

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006

Hypothyroidism, a condition where the body is not producing enough levels of thyroid hormone, can cause fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, depression, memory loss and a host of other symptoms. Often, hormone treatments are necessary and when it comes to prescription medicine, Synthroid is one of the most popular drugs prescribed. But what about natural remedies for hypothyroidism?

There are a number of natural ways to treat hypothyroid conditions. For instance, Kelp is one of the most popularly used for thyroid conditions. This plant is also known as rockweed.

Kelp and Thyroid

Kelp benefits come from the multiple nutrients it contains. This seaweed is packed with more than 60 minerals, elements and amino acids. But one of the key elements in kelp and, which makes it perfect for treating hypothyroidism, is iodine. Iodine is required by the body to form thyroid hormone. What’s more… Kelp has long been used as a treatment for hypothyroidism, even before it was understood that the iodine played a role. This seaweed may also be helpful for encouraging weight loss and treating low blood pressure, goiters and fatigue, all of which may be caused by a sluggish thyroid.

Kelp has become a popular ingredient used in most herbal formulas for hypothyroidism. But did you know that kelp can also be eaten in soups or salads? If you like to try kelp, soak it for an hour in water before chopping it and then add it to a salad. This will tenderize it and you’ll be able to enjoy it as you should.

Bite-sized pieces of kelp can also be roasted for a few minutes in the oven and made into a crunchy, salty snack.

Is it Kelp good for every single hypothyroid person?

When using kelp or any other seaweed containing iodine - or a natural product containing Kelp - it is important to know if you are iodine deficient. Learn why this is key and find out how you can easily determine if your system is low in iodine by visiting

Headaches-Home Remedies and Lifestyle Changes That Work

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006

“Americans spend more than $4 billion each year on over-the-counter pain relief for headaches,” says Rita Mullin at healthdiscovery.com. “Migraine sufferers alone lose more than 157 million workdays to headache and related symptoms each year and other garden-variety headaches are responsible for another 2.8 million lost workdays. Time lost from work and resulting medical expenses due to headaches are estimated to cost American industry $50 billion each year.”

Not to mention the pain and suffering.

Yet often simple lifestyle and habit changes can make a difference in the frequency and severity of headaches. Here are several things you can try with very little effort or expense:

Get enough sleep. Sleep deprivation is common, affecting perhaps a quarter of the adult population. The ability to survive on little sleep seems to be a skill that elevates us to superhuman status; yet the fact remains that humans need a certain amount of sleep to function properly. How much is enough may vary somewhat from individual to individual, but most experts agree that adults need at least seven hours per night. Sleep less, and you will suffer.

Control your stress factors. This is a big enough topic for an entire book, but just being aware of how you react to stressors in your life may help you avoid headaches. Even the facial expressions you habitually wear can make a difference; for example, frowning and clenching your teeth can definitely cause headaches. When you’re under stress, be aware of your breathing. Are you hyperventilating or holding your breath? Practice breathing slowly and deeply.

Experiment with your diet. Some foods can trigger migraines. Migraine sufferers might benefit from avoiding aged cheeses, such as Brie, Gruyere, and cheddar; alcohol; and black tea. So can many food additives, such as MSG. Coffee–because it contains caffeine, a vasoconstrictor–can relieve a headache; conversely, suddenly stopping or cutting back on caffeine consumption can cause a headache. And don’t skip meals–that can trigger a headache.

Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water, and remember that caffeine is a diuretic; the more caffeinated beverages you drink, the more water you will need to replace the fluids. Also note that drinking alcohol is doubly harmful, for besides being a direct cause of headaches, it is also a diuretic. So are sugary drinks. Stick with water as much as possible.

Keep your feet warm. This is obviously more of an issue in the winter. Keeping your feet well covered with socks and closed shoes will draw blood away from your head to your feet, thus relieving the blood pressure in your head. At night, cover your feet with plenty of layers at the foot of your bed; you might consider wearing socks to bed.

Use heat and cold to your advantage. When the headaches starts, applying an ice pack to your head (on the top of your head or your forehead) can provide quick relief. If that sounds too uncomfortable, soaking your feet in hot water can have the same effect; some people have had success with soaking their feet alternately in hot and cold water. Try applying a heating pad to your neck. Finally, try taking a hot bath.

Check your lighting. This too is more of an issue in winter, with its short days and indirect light. It’s worse for people who work in windowless buildings, unwittingly subjecting themselves to concentrated doses of artificial light. If this is your situation, spend as much time as you can outdoors, especially in the middle of the day, or at least indoors near a window. Finally, if you have any fluorescent lights in your home or workplace, do your best to replace them all with full-spectrum lights, available in a wide variety of fixture styles.

Try massage and/or biofeedback. A massage can relieve stress by relaxing the muscles in your neck and other parts of your body. Biofeedback also can be effective in preventing and relieving headaches by changing and controlling the body’s vital functions such as temperature, muscle tension, and blood flow. In thermal biofeedback, commonly used for migraines, relaxation techniques are used to increase blood flow to the extremities.

In some cases, prescription medications and, as a last resort, surgery may provide the only relief. Only your healthcare provider can say for sure. Yet these eight fairly simple and “do-able” tips are definitely worth a try. They may save you your share of that $54 billion spent on pain relievers and lost productivity each year.

All Natural Shampoo - 5 Tips

Here are 5 tips to ensure you are buying a true all natural shampoo product, even though the label may say all natural.

All natural shampoo will not contain as an ingredient SLS, or sodium lauryl sulfate. This additive is only added to ensure the shampoo bubbles, and forms a thick lather, neither of which ensure your hair is actually clean. This is the same additive added to oven cleaners. SLS is a known, and much publicized skin irritant.
No SLES is listed in the ingredients. This is a sister chemical to the SLS. While SLES is not quite as much of a skin irritant, it definitely causes drying of the skin. You should avoid SLS and SLES at all costs.
No PEG is added. This ingredient is normally listed as PEG-with a number behind it. Also a strong skin irritant. One of the main ingredients if brake fluid.
No term fragrance will be listed in the ingredients. Fragrance is just an artificially derived chemical, which is cheap to use and makes the shampoo have an aroma to it. This is also a know skin irritant. All natural shampoos will be fragrance and enhanced with pure essential oils.
No artificial colors, preservatives, or ingredients added.

Monday, May 29th, 2006

If you have ever logged onto the Internet, you are sure to have seen an online weight loss program being advertised more than once. The reason why there is so much advertising calling your attention to an online weight loss program is that 65% of the American population is actually overweight. Too bad but true!

You may have wondered what an online weight loss program is all about, but did not want to spend the money to check it out. There are some very impressive tools that an online weight loss program can provide, including online tracking tools for weight loss and nutrition that are easy to use.

Usually an online weight loss program will create weekly menus and shopping lists for you based upon the diet that you choose and any other specifications that you have. Registered dieticians create these menus and make them as easy as possible to follow.

A good online weight loss program will also give you personal support in chat rooms and on forums as well as through email. This can be quite comforting if you have a question or just need some encouragements. I expect a well established online program should also include a free diet analysis and a BMI reading.

You need to pay close attention to the fees and terms of service when choosing an online weight loss program.
