Can Eating Salmon Really Give You A Flawless Face?

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

One of the most prominent spokespeople for this cause is Dr. Nicholas Perricone, whose “Wrinkle Cure” system touts salmon as a skin-saving miracle food. What started as a fringe trend–eating fish to get a smoother face–has now blossomed into a popular diet plan, and millions of men and women have given it a go. Even Oprah has sung the praises of this pink-orange fish on her talk show. What’s the reason for the popularity of the so-called salmon diet? Simple: it works.

Why Salmon?

Salmon, along with tilapia, trout, herring and sardines, are rich in a substance called omega-3 fatty acids. Don’t balk at that term–these fats are terrific for you. In fact, they are crucial to the growth and functioning of our organs, and they supposedly help to diminish dangerous inflammation within the body. (It’s that inflammation that can trigger a host of conditions we’d rather avoid, like acne, obesity, diabetes and heart disease.) Among the different types of fish, salmon is one of the richest, chockfull of good-for-you fats and other healthful substances that keep your body functioning like a well-oiled machine.

Did you know that humans are not able to produce omega-3s? That’s why it’s so important that we obtain them from the foods we eat on a daily basis. When you eat plenty of salmon and stick to a healthy overall diet and lifestyle, you will begin to see dramatic changes in your skin’s appearance and texture. Your skin will become smoother, plumper and more moisture-rich. Blemishes will fade and you’ll regain the glow you may have had when you were a teenager. Your eyes will likely become brighter, your hair shinier and stronger, and even your mood cheerier!

How Much Should You Eat?

Make salmon (or other fatty fish) a regular part of your meal plan. Aim to have fish about 10 times per week, whether in the form of a morning omelet, a lunchtime salad, or a dinnertime fish filet. Top your whole wheat bagel with lox for a delicious and healthy “booster shot” for your skin. Grill salmon plain and top with a mango relish. There is virtually no limit to what you can do with this delicious and versatile ingredient!

Round out your nutritious lifestyle with plenty of leafy greens and antioxidant-rich fruits, such as berries. A handful of nuts is also a great addition to your daily diet plan. And don’t forget to keep the water bottle on hand–drinking plenty of water helps to flush the body of toxins and get your skin looking gorgeous.

Low Cholesterol Diet

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

Nowadays, cholesterol is becoming a real threat to many people. The main reason behind this is that people tend to consume more products that are rich in saturated fats, such as whole milk dairy products, poultry, and egg yolks.

Additionally, most people also rely on food chains for their daily diet or perhaps on processed foods, especially if their schedule is too hectic to accommodate home cooking. So if you are one of these people who love to eat these kinds of foods, it’s time to reassess your diet and start eating a low-cholesterol diet.

The low-cholesterol diet is a diet low in saturated fat, which helps lower your cholesterol level and protect you from various heart diseases. The foods that should be included in this diet are fat-free dairy products, lean meats, fish and shellfish, skinless poultry, and whole-grain foods. Fresh fruits and green vegetables, especially when combined with large quantities of olive oil and monostaturates, should also be included because these are rich in vitamins and minerals that are good for your body and reduce your risk for high cholesterol. In addition to these, certain foods that contain plant stanols or plant sterols such as cholesterol-lowering margarines and salad dressings can also be added to your diet to boost your body’s LDL-lowering power.

Meanwhile, foods that are high in cholesterol and saturated fats should only be eaten in moderation. If possible, these should not be included in your diet. Avoid liver and other organ meats, egg yolks, full-fat dairy products, high-fat processed meats, and fried foods. Limiting the intake of these foods can greatly reduce your cholesterol levels and decrease your chances of developing heart disease, as well as protect you from future heart attacks.

A simple low-cholesterol diet is a big help to you, but only if you observe and follow these guidelines regularly. Remember that your health is in your hands.

A Thermometer to Detect Underlying Male Physical Problems

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

Many people know that erectile dysfunction is a very common condition affecting more than half of all men over age 40, but only few understand the close relation between erectile dysfunction and its physical causes. The consequence is the fact that the main majority of men do not seek treatment because they hope the problem is in their head, they think it is temporary or they are embarrassed discussing it

Speaking about such psychological causes, the true is men should think of their penis as a thermometer to detect underlying physical problems.
For instance, hypertension leads to erectile dysfunction. At the same time, the presence of erectile dysfunction usually indicates that there are other physical problems the person should take in his consideration. Many surveys found that men with erectile dysfunction were more than twice as likely to have diabetes, and 1.6 times more likely to have blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Specialists agree that all men get plaque in the arteries and that means that in a certain condition the penis can experience a lack a blood supply.

The earliest stages of atherosclerosis involve abnormalities in the endothelial inner layer of blood vessels. The endothelial inner layer is a group of cells that regulates the ability of the vessels to respond to changes and dilate when necessary. Though the changes may occur throughout the body, he said, erectile dysfunction may be one of the first noticed symptoms.

Most of above problems can now be solved using a category of drugs named PDE-5 inhibitors (of which Viagra is the most known example). Any underlying health problems need special attention and need to be cured, but the success of these drugs is based on solving the lack of blood supply.

Are You Ready For Low Carb?

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

Everyone’s been talking about low carb diets. While most people tend to associate it with South Beach or Atkins, there are actually quite a few books that center on the principle of cutting out the carbs: Sugar Busters, Protein Power, The Zone Diet, Carbohydrates Addict Diet. They differ on how strict they are about carbohydrate intake—what you can eat, and not eat, or how much you are later allowed to eat in the later phases of the diet—but as a whole, they agree on one thing: carbs are bad.

The Carbohydrate Principle

Which makes you wonder: what’s so bad about carbs? The belief is that when you control carbohydrates, you lower your body’s
production of insulin. Insulin gives your body the “quick fix” of energy (which is why, after eating carbs, you get the famous sugar rush). But without carbs, your body’s forced to use your body’s fat and protein stores.

Low carb diets can lead to rapid weight loss, but nutritionists are debating whether or not it should be continued in a long term. This is because you force your body to burn muscle, and muscle can be a dieter’s best friend because it burns calories even when you’re at rest. However, some diets allow restricted carbs in later phases—which would lower the rate of your weight loss, but is healthier for you in the long run.

What are the benefits of low carb diets?

* You feel (and weigh!) lighter. Low carb diets remove many high-calorie, low-nutrition foods such as pastries and pasta. It also forces the body to burn fat stores (i.e., the bulge around your hips). The foods that are typically included, mainly protein, low-fat dairy, and fiber, also tend to reduce water retention.

* You feel less hungry and more energetic. The body digests carbs and uses very quickly, leading to quick bursts of energy but also frequent hunger pangs and the infamous “sugar rush-sugar crash” cycle When you replace carbs with fiber and protein, which takes longer to process, you’ll feel full longer and have more stable energy levels. That is also linked to less mood swings and higher concentration.

* Better blood pressure and cholesterol. Low carb diets usually remove saturated fats, and refined or processed food, and shift to what is called “whole food groups” (low fat dairy, protein, fiber) which help control blood pressure and cholesterol. The significant reduction of sugary food—which typically contain lots of calories, no nutritional content—also helps control obesity, which is a big factor in heart attacks.

What foods are low carb?

Low carb diets sound good, but be prepared: low carb diets will take out what many consider as staples in all meals: bread, pasta, and rice. In fact, low carb diets will remove anything made of flour, starchy vegetables like corn and potatoes, and foods that contain sugar (this includes several fruits), and cereals that aren’t specifically labeled as “low carb”. However, you will be allowed to take meat and eggs, low sugar fruits like strawberries, and high-protein but low-fat alternatives like soybeans. Some low carb diets allow dairy.

Much as we’d like to avoid it, the reality is that all women have to go through the physical and emotional issues of menopause. It can be a very challenging time, and it’s important to find ways to get any help or relief that might be required.

Aromatherapy is a great way to relieve any pain associated with menopause. There are many essential oils that are wonderful for creating a feeling of calm and relaxation, which is a great help if you’re suffering from cramps or stomach problems.

There are also aromatherapy fragrances that are specifically suited for helping your body feel at peace. Using these particular oils will help you to feel more relaxed and comfortable, as well as helping to reduce the pain and stress often experienced with menopause.

Many women also find that depression gets hold of them when they start to go through menopause. It helps to know that certain aromatherapy oils do a great job revitalizing your body, as well as give you a burst of energy and strength. This really helps to reduce the effects of pain, fatigue and depression that many women associate with menopause.

There are some essential oils that simply have a positive effect on the mind and body, working through the sense of smell. There are many physical symptoms that come with menopause, and these essential oils help to reduce these. Some possible menopause symptoms include:

Cramps
Bloating
Hot flushes
Night sweats
Restlessness

Menopause can be seen as the end of one phase of life, and it can be difficult to let go and realize that you’ll never get that part of your life back again. So it’s important to do whatever you need to do to get through this stage of your life with the minimal amount of disruption and discomfort.

Choosing a Hair Loss Prevention Product

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

Thinning hair can be a big and embarrassing problem. It can affect other people’s perception of you and make you feel self-conscious about your appearance. You may have tried hair loss treatment products to help stop further loss of hair but haven’t been entirely successful with it. Here are some tips you can use when choosing a hair loss prevention product that will help you grow more hair.

The first thing that you should do is to look into various kinds of available information. There are many websites about hair loss and the different aspects of the problem. There are also a lot of hair loss websites that promote their very own hair loss prevention product. You can browse through these information and learn everything about your problem. When you have learned what you need to, you will be at a better position to determine the best choice that’s suitable for you and be better informed when choosing other options available to you.

A hair loss prevention product may come in different varieties. But if you want a more effective product that prevents hair loss, opt for one that contains minoxidil since this is one ingredient that has been approved to help hair grow back and slow down the loss of hair for some people. A hair loss prevention product with minoxidil is often prescribed to patients before any other treatment. It is often prescribed together with Retin-A for increased absorption of minoxidil into hair follicles. Although a lot of users may find that a certain hair loss prevention product may work for them, such is not the case with other people.

You should be careful when choosing from the long list of hair loss prevention products that are available today. Before deciding on a hair loss prevention product, you should check if it has been approved by the FDA or has been shown to be effective in decent studies.

Here are other tips when choosing a product that prevents hair loss:

· As much as possible, choose a hair loss prevention product that has been in the market for a long time as the product is usually sold with a money back guarantee.

· Ingredients for a hair loss prevention product should be completely natural, hypoallergenic, non-toxic, contain no hormone and have been proven to be safe in laboratory testing.

· You know you have chosen a good hair loss prevention product if your hair grows about ½ inch to one inch a month, although this may vary from person to person.

· Be sure that you are able to identify the active ingredient in the chosen hair loss product so you can be ensured that the hair loss prevention product is effective. This is one way of avoiding possible side effects.

Prevention of further hair loss is less complicated than stopping or reversing it. Following some simple tips may not necessarily be the solution to the problem. But in the long run, prevention is better and a whole lot cheaper than any other solution to hair thinning problems.

First Comprehensive Help Book On The Subject Of Hyperemesis Gravidarum

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

Effects of Hyperemesis Gravidarum

A hyperemetic mother can vomit between four and twenty (or more) times a day for months. If, starting at six weeks, a particular woman vomits an average of fifteen times a day she will have endured several hundred emetic episodes by twenty weeks. Imagine the discomfort of vomiting that much in such a short span of time! The vomiting can be so frequent that the stomach acid erodes tooth enamel. The emesis itself is often bile-filled and blood tinged (the blood usually comes from small tears in the esophagus, stomach or duodenum), and the cycle is self-perpetuating and relentless. In addition to the excessive vomiting, a severely hyperemetic mother suffers from weight loss, dehydration and metabolic disturbances.

Weight Loss

The nausea and vomiting of HG make it nearly impossible for the mother to eat or drink much, if anything. Obviously, if you don’t eat you lose weight. Again, losing greater than 5% of your total body weight is one clinical indication supporting a diagnosis of severe HG.

Dehydration

Fluid, which makes up around two-thirds of a person’s body weight, is vital, because every single process in our bodies occurs in a fluid medium. Surprisingly, dehydration can cause nausea and vomiting, and that’s the last thing a hyperemetic wants more of. Some symptoms of dehydration are lowered blood pressure, headache, blurred vision and fever.

Electrolyte Imbalance

Electrolytes are chemical compounds that break down into such elements as potassium and salt in the body fluid, and they play a vital role in stabilizing body systems. Severe vomiting can cause electrolyte imbalance, which may manifest as a tingling sensation in the hands and feet, general weakness, decreased reflexes or reaction times and other symptoms.

Carbohydrate Depletion and Ketonuria

Carbohydrates include sugars, starches, and fibers. They are the body’s main source of energy, and if carbohydrate levels are inadequate, a person’s body begins to break down fat for energy and may take energy from muscle and even organs. This can disrupt the nervous system.

The central nervous system refers to the brain and spinal cord and conscious motor activities like walking and talking. The peripheral nervous system involves automated functioning such as the heartbeat and digestion. Your body needs energy to function. Carbohydrate depletion causes weariness with a capital “W”, and it can make a three-step trip to the toilet feel like world travel.

Additionally, when the body must break down fat for energy, this creates substances called ketones, which can make the blood too acidic. If your urine is flooded with ketones it is a sign that you are in a period of starvation.

If you are living with the suffering of HG, don’t let your physicians tell you that you’re not sick but only having a baby. You are sick. HG is not a normal pregnancy experience. However, be encouraged; there is good news!

HG and Pregnancy Outcomes

With so much nausea and vomiting, adequate nutrition is obviously an issue. A good diet and vitamins during pregnancy have been so fanatically drilled into society that many of us incorrectly assume that a woman who eats negligible amounts and hyper-vomits for months is going to have a malformed, severely retarded baby if the little one even survives. Fortunately, nothing could be further from the truth. The body has a miraculous compensatory ability, and a severely hyperemetic woman with sufficient medical care has as much chance at a successful pregnancy outcome as anyone. In fact, some studies have shown that hyperemetic mothers have a reduced risk of miscarriage[12] and no increased rate of birth defects.[13-14] However, alternative nutrition is often considered in cases involving a total body weight loss of 10% or more, in order to prevent low birth weight and prematurity.[15]

It Ain’t Easy Being Brave

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

A zoo attendant entered a lion cage carrying only a broom. He casually swept with no concern for the wild animal. He even poked the big cat with his broom. The lion hissed at him and moved to another corner of the enclosure. An onlooker remarked “You certainly are brave.” The sweeping man chuckled and said, “I ain’t brave, that old cat ain’t got no teeth.”

In situations where there’s not much danger, bravery comes easily. However, most of us face some very scary stuff. Having a sick child or losing your home, your income, your health, or your spouse can be terrifying. In circumstances like these, we can feel alone and vulnerable.

Children who feel that way curl up with a soft blanket or a cuddly teddy bear and feel more secure. But what can adults with big problems cling to? We need more than a piece of cloth or a toy to calm our fears.

When I’m scared, there are two sayings I like to remember: “To be afraid is to believe in evil more than you believe in God,” and “Courage is fear that has said its prayers.”

Many people think being brave means having no fear, but courage is actually continuing on, in spite of fear. Those who believe that God is ultimately in control can trust Him to do the worrying.

When facing fear, if we don’t turn to God, we’re missing out. He can provide the courage we need. “Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart, all you who hope in the Lord.”

(Psalm 31:24).

I taught my grandson this Bible verse: “When I am afraid, I will trust in thee.” (Psalm 56:3) We sing it at bedtime to calm his fear of closet monsters, but this simple verse applies to my adult-sized fears as well. When anxiety descends like a heavy fog, these nine words can release fear’s choke hold.

When the lions in life bare their teeth, I tell God my worries. Then I put my hope in Him. Remembering that He’s with me calms my anxious thoughts. Revelation 5:5 says Jesus is the Lion from the tribe of Judah. A lion may be the king of the jungle, but Jesus is the king of kings. (Revelation 19:16) He is strong and mighty. He is never afraid. He is greater than the lions.

The Pros and Cons of Owning Your Own Treadmill

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

While treadmills are a great alternative to real running and complicated exercises, however, they are not without their downsides.

To start off with, treadmills can be very expensive, especially if you buy one with all the luxurious special features. By the time you add in sales taxes, delivery charges and all the rest, you’re looking at a pretty significant chunk of change. Of course, there’s nothing saying that you need to get one with absolutely every feature around – if it’s your first treadmill, you’ll be absolutely fine with a more basic model, whatever the salesman might tell you.

The next problem is that treadmills can be very large, and there might not be space in your house. Again, this problem is quite easily solved, as long as you keep your wits about you and realise exactly how big the treadmill you’re buying is, instead of just blindly choosing one that takes your fancy and hoping for the best. There are surprisingly small treadmills on the market for smaller homes – all you have to do is look for them.

Some people complain of loud motors on some cheaper treadmills, and it can be annoying if you’re not used to it. A good solution is to put on the TV or listen to some music, which also helps with the boredom that many people experience when they just run on a treadmill and do nothing else at the same time.

The final point is one that is important to people who are training for actual races. As treadmills have no wind resistance, they are quite unsuitable for training for real outdoor running – you should be getting out there and doing it on a track instead. While a treadmill can come close to simulating wind resistance if you adjust its slope gradient, it’s not good enough for serious training, and you might injure yourself if you run a race after only training on a treadmill.

Genital Wart

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

Genital warts are warts that are found on the buttocks or on the vagina. If you find small bumps on your private areas, that you don’t know what they are, they could very well be genital warts. Genital warts are spread through sex, anal sex, and regular intercourse and through oral sex. If you have had unprotected sex with someone that you really don’t know, it can take up to three months for genital warts to show up. Even if you don’t have sex, and you have just oral sex, you can still end up with genital warts, but around your mouth.

While it can be difficult and embarrassing to see a doctor, these warts are not going to go away on their own. With proper medication, you will be able to get rid of genital warts. Genital warts are contagious just as a cold could be. If you have genital warts, your doctor or nurse is going to be able to tell what they are just by looking at them. If you are a woman and you have genital warts, you should see your gynecologist to determine if you have them inside, where your uterus and cervix are located as well. Women are at risk to have genital warts spread the to portions of the inner body where they can spread faster, and grow to be painful on the cervix or on the organs.

If you meet someone new, and you don’t know if they have a sexual disease, it is for your own protection that you don’t have sex, of any type. If you are able to use a condom at least you are somewhat protected, but that is not always a guarantee as well.

Genital warts are spread by a virus that is known as HPV. HPV is also the same virus that will give you warts on your hands, feet, on the elbows or knees, but the HPV virus that gives genital warts is a little different strain. The same noticeable types of warts you see on your hands, that get crusty and seem to be puss filled are the types of warts that will be found on the genitals. If you have genital warts, you can spread them to someone by intercourse, by oral sex, and by anal sex. Genital warts are something you can get rid of, but only with the proper treatment and antibiotics.

What you should know is that with treatment genital warts will disappear, but they can resurface and come back even after treatment, which is why it is so very important to avoid having sex with someone you don’t know, and avoid having sex with another person if you do have genital warts. You can pass along genital warts to another person, even if you don’t have the symptoms or the warts appearing on your skin. Be sure that you know and trust a person before having sex with someone. If you do find that you have genital warts, seek treatment to get your genital warts under control.
