As The Primary Care Giver for an Alzheimer’s Patient, How Can I Get a Break?

Saturday, September 30th, 2006

Taking care of a loved one who has Alzheimer’s is a huge responsibility and very time consuming. It can bring a lot of stress, frustration and more. You devote all your time to your loved one and not have time for yourself anymore. You always wonder: when can I take a break from her? It is not an easy decision, but sometimes it has to be made for your own well being.

There are different options to consider. If your loved one is in early/mid stages of Alzheimer’s you can consider private duty home care. Many agencies throughout the nation and in your community provide this service. A list of providers can be obtained in the phone book, from the local Alzheimer’s Association, Area Agency on Aging, or any case management and referral source. The private duty home care can include services like bathing, sitting, taking to appointments, shopping, meal preparation and other day-to-day essentials. This assistance will definitely help you in getting more free time.

You might also try adult day care. The centers usually operate from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm. It is a good environment for socialization. Your loved one will be able to interact with others, but she knows she will be back home for the night. If you decide to look for an adult day care, you will want to make sure the staff is experienced in caring for Alzheimer’s patients.

Another solution is hiring an independent in-home care giver yourself. This person will take care of your loved one while you are away. You may be able to obtain names and information about experienced caregivers from places such as your church, Alzheimer’s Association, Area Agency on Aging.

Make sure you check the references. Meet and talk with the prospective caregiver and see how the person interacts with your loved one. Touching is very important. It could be a pat on the back or gently rubbing the hand. You can even ask your loved one for input about the person. People with dementia are often perceptive and intuitive.

And don’t forget! You have family members as well that can help you. A loved one who has Alzheimer’s affects all family members. So if family members offer to help, take advantage of it.

Remember, help is available. Do not feel guilty because you want to take a break. You deserve it.

Virility Demystified

Saturday, September 30th, 2006

Throughout the eons of human existence, virility has been a predominant desire. For many, virility is aligned in our subconscious with attributes such as youth, health, and physical proficiency. It is an indication of the ability to reproduce, a trait genetically implanted in our being. However, for numerous men, through no fault of their own, virility is a trait that is not easily achieved.

It is a fact that countless men, even those under the age of thirty, have problems with virility. Luckily, the modern day has opened a vast vista of information for men who wish to seek a resurgence of virility in their lives. This is no longer a subject to hide from, to brush under the rug, or to keep in silence. It is a topic that more and more men are becoming comfortable discussing; and because of this, aggressive research has been conducted to find a solution.

The first step towards improving virility is to recognize the warning signals that may indicate there may be a problem with it. Signs of a lack of virility include an inability to retain a hard erection, premature ejaculation, and/or impotence. While a medical opinion is certainly suggested, it is a fact that the majority of these cases are simply caused by a decrease of blood flowing to the penis region during sexual stimulation. Anxiety about the condition can actually cause a vicious cycle, since fears about sexual performance can lead to stress, which actively works against the achievement of a hard erection. Stress forces the body to produce adrenaline, which reduces the concentration of blood flow to the penis, therefore even further reducing erection quality.

Erections are a direct result of blood flowing into the erectile tissues. During arousal, the arteries in the penis relax and widen, allowing more blood to flood the penis. The veins that would normally carry this blood out of the penis contract, thereby forcing the blood to remain in the penis. This process results in a temporary hardening of the penis arteries, which produces a hard erection. When the blood flowing in the penile region is reduced, virility is jeopardized.

Numerous products have been made available to assist men in regaining their virility. These products have been proven to show remarkable results. Men the world over have benefited from these supplements, as have their partners. There are various options available from prescription medications to herbal supplements. More and more men are turning to proven herbal supplements to increase virility as they normally do not cause side effects and are natural in origin. Some of the most popular of these products are Vig-Rx, Size Pro, Optim Rx, among others. Recently, the most sought after of them all is MacaEnhancer.

Thanks to these supplements, virility is now an easily achievable goal for the majority of men. A new and exciting sexual experience is just waiting to be enjoyed.

Nutritional Supplements for Good Health

Saturday, September 30th, 2006

To attain and maintain good health, you need a complete and balanced diet together with regular exercise. But what if you cannot obtain a sufficient healthy diet through conventional food intake? There is the option – take nutritional supplements for good health.

1. What are nutritional supplements?

Nutritional supplements for good health are nutrients which may include one or several of the following: vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, and medicinal herbs or botanicals. They take the form of a pill, capsule, tablet, powder, or liquid, and can be sold as “nutritional supplements” or “dietary supplements.”

Nutritional supplements for good health are not intended to replace a conventional meal or be made as a sole item in a diet; instead, depending on their formulation, nutritional supplements for good health can help protect against free radicals from damaging the body, boost the immune system, help fight stress, increase mental acuity, and slow down the degenerative process.

2. The effectiveness of nutritional supplements for good health

Nutritional supplements that are marketed to promote good health are not intended as an absolute ‘cures.’ Even if you take them regularly, you do not completely eradicate your chances of acquiring certain diseases or conditions. At best, supplements lessen your chances of acquiring these diseases.

The effectiveness of nutritional supplements for good health is still being researched however, and there is no clear-cut evidence that people who are taking these supplements are healthier and less prone to diseases than people who are not taking them.

At this point, the effectiveness of supplements is generally speculation, and any ‘miracle’ or absolute claim should be viewed with some reservations. However, there is a direct link found between the presence of free radicals and certain diseases, making antioxidants present in nutritional supplements—found in vitamins, minerals, and herbs—potent in fighting against free radical damage. It is important to note however, that it is virtually impossible to completely rid the body of all free radicals.

3. Being safe

Nutritional supplements for good health are unregulated by the Food and Drug Administration Board (FDA). They are not subjected to testing prior to marketing and sale.

It is therefore important to choose supplements from a manufacturer that is reputable and GMP-compliant— this compliance is a sign that the product does not contain contaminants or prescription drugs, and that it contains the exact amount of ingredients and dosage indicated in the label (nothing less).

The product we personally use called Total Balance - health-product-we-use.com health-product-we-use.com is the most natural and effective supplement we have come across. We have been using this product for over 3 years with excellent health results.

Diseases Caused by Smoking Made Sal’s Dad Angry

Saturday, September 30th, 2006

This is Sal’s story.

It’s about diseases caused by smoking, and if you start this story, read it to the end, but don’t start if you’re squeamish.

Sal’s Dad died angry. And guess what? Most smokers die angry, and Sal said not only was her Dad eaten up by cancer, he was eaten up by vitriol against himself and the tobacco companies.

Before Sal’s Dad got caught with one of the predictable diseases caused by smoking, his favorite saying was, “I’ll give up smoking when I’m ready.” And he did give up… but he wasn’t ready.

No way was he ready to give up life, but that goes grimly hand-in-hand with giving up smoking when you have no choice, ready or not.

He wasn’t ready to face the long slow decline, the complete takeover of life as he had known it.

Nothing else was important - money; the nearly finished bathroom with the imported Italian tiles; his precious daughter Sal’s engagement party; the gardening club trip and lots of other things he had looked forward to.

Sal’s Dad agonized and beat himself up over his past decisions. Cell by cell his body died as he re-lived each cigarette by cigarette he had smoked with regret. Many of the diseases caused by smoking have warning signs, but Sal’s Dad had just grabbed another cigarette to help relax and cope whenever he had felt out of sorts.

He was not ready for nature’s hand. How dare this happen to him. Oh if only, if only…

No smoker is EVER ready. Many famous people who died before their time used their fame and money to campaign and rail against smoking, as they gasped, moaned, screamed, dribbled, oozed and hacked slowly from this world.

The original Marlborough Man - this tough, tanned cowboy riding on his horse, looking healthy, sexy, rich and popular - desperately made a video to help other smokers, as he succumbed to one of the diseases caused by smoking - cancer. But just as desperately, the big tobacco guns destroyed every copy they could find. (There are still a few underground grainy copies left in the US.)

What about sexy Humphrey Bogart, star of many great films and arguably the finest film ever made - “Casa Blanca.” His signature line was lighting 2 cigs at once and then passing one to a beautiful woman, saying oh so coolly, “One for me and one for my chick.” He died of lung cancer aged 56 at the height of his career and life.

Smoking diseases got to handsome Yul Brunner before he was ready too, and he passionately implored young people not to start, as he struggled to the end.

Ayn Rand, highly intelligent, famous author and founder of Objectivism, was quoted as the world’s most rational woman leader from the late 50’s to early 70’s. In her day it was so cool to smoke that she declared she distrusted people who didn’t smoke! Lung cancer claimed her early in 1982.

Can you see today’s “beautiful people,” the stars of screen and sport who smoke, struggling in agony, with tubes in where most of their throat used to be, or with legs amputated because of gangrene due to lack of blood flow, or being implored by a nurse or a loved one to keep breathing, as each breath sounds like hail on a roof and their whole chest wants to explode?

Forget about them, can you see yourself if you’re a smoker for that matter? The diseases caused by smoking don’t care who they claim and when. They don’t care if you’ve got plans for your future.

Every single cigarette is dragging you towards an early, angry and regretful end.

There is nothing more precious than life, which is why you automatically look before you cross the road - to avoid danger.

You can be careful around traffic.

You can be careful what you eat.

But you can’t be careful with smoking - you smoke or you don’t - no compromises… just bitter regrets, like Sal and Sal’s Dad.

Products That Really Soak Up Oil?

Friday, September 29th, 2006

You have oily skin, right? You already know that it is no fun. Just like dry skin, oily skin is on the other end of the facial extreme and can be just as troublesome to get rid of. With your hormones going through some kind of hiccupping phase or simply because you are not treating your skin right, too much oil on your face will leave it looking shiny, prone to acne outbreaks, and your pores will look larger than you would like them to.

It is time to stop fussing about your oily skin and do something about it. There is any number of products on the shelves of your local drugstore or awaiting shipment from numerous online cosmetics companies that are meant to help with oily skin. You can get special cleansers that will help swipe the extra oil away, exfoliators to give your pores a boost, and creams or cosmetics that will soak up oil throughout the day, unless you feel like opting for oil blotters, which you can dab on your face and toss into the trash, leaving your skin with less oil than a few seconds before.

In the case that you decide to go with the oily skin prevention/control method by using foundations or extra creams or lotions that are created to soak up oil, you may be wondering just how this is possible. How can your foundation control your oil? How can one cream or lotion soak it up? Where does it go?

When you buy creams or other products that are meant to soak up the excess oil on your skin, the reason they are able to do so is because of specialized ingredients. Some of these ingredients may be man made, engineered in order to be able to absorb the oil on your face. The ingredients do so on a very small scale, but as a whole they leave your face with (as they advertise) a matte look. No shine, no problem.

Other companies use organic or natural ingredients such as specific types of clays or muds. You already know that certain types of masks that utilize clays or muds do the same thing for your oily skin; soak up the oil. In putting them into creams, foundations, or other products, they essentially are doing the same thing, but are formulated in order to be able to control your excess oil for a much longer time.

With a mask, you might be oil free for several hours after removing the mask, but your skin will eventually appear oily again. With these oil control products, once you put them on, they are to remain on your face and give you oil control for a greater amount of time. Some products boast 8 hour oil control.

The times that they advertise, however, will depend upon your skin and the care you give it. If you do nothing for your skin in terms of cleansing, exfoliating, etc., and simply believe you will be fine in relying on the creams, foundations, or other oil control products, then you will not receive the same results as you will have an enormous amount of oil buildup on your skin.

This buildup will likely lead to an acne outbreak. For someone who takes good care of their oily skin, an oil control product might be the final item they need in order to keep fresh the entire day, looking oil free and also being free from large acne outbreaks.

You can also use products in conjunction as some companies may make them in such a way that they are most effective for oily skin when used at the same time. For example, after your skin care routine, you might put on an oil control cream and then follow up with a foundation meant to help control oily skin.

Do your research on products and ask your dermatologist for suggestions if you are still unsure. Products can indeed help soak up the oil on your skin, but be sure to use them right in order to get the best results.

Smokers Have More Wrinkles

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Here’s another good reason to quit smoking. Researchers at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor’s dermatology clinic found that smoking may increase wrinkles at parts of the body other than the face – even on areas that are covered with clothes!

Yolanda Helfrich and her team who studied 82 people aged 22 – 91 years old, found that the risk of developing wrinkles was strong in those who smoked heavily for years. The wrinkles were identified by three judges – two dermatologists and a medical student – who examined photographs of the participants’ upper inner arms.

“The judges used a nine-point scale developed by Helfrich’s team. A rating of 0 indicated no fine wrinkling; severe fine wrinkling yielded the maximum score of 8,” reported Miranda Hitti in WebMD Medical News.

Forty of the participants had a history of smoking but this was not disclosed to the judges who identified the severity of wrinkling based solely on the photographs they were shown. Two-thirds of the participants had low wrinkle scores but the highest – indicating deeper wrinkles - belonged to the smokers.

“We examined non-facial skin that was protected from the sun, and found that the total number of packs of cigarettes smoked per day and the total years a person has smoked were linked with the amount of skin damage a person experienced,” Helfrich said in a University of Michigan news release.

Earlier, Bipen Patel of the Department of Public Health and Primary Care at Cambridge University in England linked heavy facial wrinkling to an increased risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in current and former middle-aged smokers.

COPD is an incurable chronic lung disease that includes emphysema and bronchitis. It is the fourth leading cause of death in America that has killed more women than men. Patients with COPD find it hard to breathe and smoking is a leading risk factor for the disease.

“In 2004, 11.4 million American adults (aged 18 and over) were estimated to have COPD. However, close to 24 million adults have evidence of impaired lung function, indicating an under diagnosis of COPD,” according to the American Lung Association.

The subjects in Bipen’s study were 149 current and former smokers in their mid- to late 50s. After being photographed, the subjects’ photos were examined by a pair of dermatologists who rated their facial wrinkles.

“Most participants had little or no facial wrinkling, but 25 (nearly 17 percent) were wrinkled, write Patel and colleagues. Of the 25 wrinkled participants, 21 had COPD, the researchers found. Overall, 68 of the 149 participants had COPD,” said Hitti.

“Compared with unwrinkled participants, those with wrinkles were more than eight times as likely to have COPD, the study shows,” Hitti added.

Based on these studies, it makes perfect sense to quit smoking now if you seriously want to avoid wrinkles and a host of diseases associated with this habit. To reduce whatever wrinkles you have now, use Dermaxin, the anti-wrinkle cream that contains four special ingredients, namely Matrxyl 3000, collagen, Argireline, and hyaluronic acid to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, restore skin elasticity and smoothness, moisturize the skin, and reduce the signs of aging. Why Is The Prescription Drug Trazodone Used For Insomnia?

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Despite the fact that there are many natural ways to deal with insomnia, millions of people continue to take a variety of over-the-counter and prescriptions drugs whenever they find that they’re having sleep problems. One such prescription drug is Trazodone.

Trazodone (or Trazodone hydrochloride) is the generic name for the drug Desyrel® which is an anti-depressant which is commonly prescribed for major depressive disorders and is also sometimes used to deal with insomnia. The problem however is that the two have become dissociated and, while it is one thing to choose to prescribe Trazodone for a depressive disorder with associated insomnia, it is quite another to use the drug simply to treat insomnia in isolation.

Trazodone works in part by inhibiting the re-uptake or serotonin, which is a chemical produced naturally by the body and which plays an important role is regulating the sleep cycle. Put in simple terms, Trazodone increases the level of serotonin in the body which acts as the body’s natural sleeping pill.

Now on the surface it would seem perfectly natural to use a drug that increases the body’s own natural sleep aid to cure insomnia.

There is however a problem with using Trazodone and that is the side effects.

Side effects will clearly vary from one individual to the next but, in general, the common side effects of Trazodone are sleepiness (in this case a desired side effect), headache, congestion, stomach upset, constipation, nervousness, muscle pain, sweating, blurred vision and so the list goes on. In addition, in some men it can cause a painful and long-lasting erection, which may require emergency or even surgical treatment, with permanent damage often resulting.

In fairness the list of side effects for most drugs, including communal garden day-to-day drugs, can be frighteningly long and the truth of the matter is that most people don’t suffer any of the side effects, or at least don’t suffer them to any degree that matters. In the case of Trazodone however this is not the case when it is used to treat insomnia.

For most people Trazodone works wonderfully well in the very short-term and will certainly help them to fall asleep and also to stay asleep through the night, enjoying, in particular, a greater degree of deep sleep. It is the following morning however when the side effects tend to set in.

In many cases this means a congested nose, feelings of tiredness and grogginess (often being described as akin to a hangover) and, in some cases, a degree of unsteadiness.

Insomnia is a common problem which affects many millions of people both in the short-term as occasional or transitory insomnia and in the long-term as chronic insomnia. In most cases however drugs will only ever provide a very short-term solution and the longer-term use of drugs will invariably make matters worse, rather than better.

This said, if you do feel the need to turn to drugs in the short-term to help with the symptoms of insomnia, then choose a drug that is designed specifically for sleep problems and not Trazodone which should only ever be used to treat insomnia when that insomnia is part and parcel of a major depressive disorder.

Signs And Symptoms Of The Autistic Disorder

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

The first signs of autism occur during the early infancy and the disorder is usually diagnosed by the age of three when parents are alarmed by the abnormal development of their child. Infants mostly develop normally until the age of 2 when the growth as well as the mental development rapidly regresses. The autistic symptoms vary from one patient to another, from mild to severe forms.

Between the first warning signs is the abnormal response to different stimuli like light or sound. Noises may appear painful to them, smells are overwhelmingly strong and touches are receipted as pains. Loud noises caused by vehicles or machines, and very bright lights from different sources, trigger crises and inconsolable crying.

The most specific behavior for the autistic patients is the indifference showed to the surroundings and the satisfaction of playing and being alone. They show no real interest in toys and are usually uninterested to interact with others, characteristics called in the medical specialty as protodeclarative pointing. The activity level varies from an increase to reduction and autistic children resist cuddling.

Autistic patients laugh, cry or are feeling distressed for unapparent reasons and cannot express their needs using the actual language. The use different gesture instead of words to express their wishes, as the impaired language development is obvious.

Patients with high functioning autism manage to develop certain rudimentary communication skills but these cannot really serve for an actual social interaction. Some words or phrases are used repetitively (echolalia) and their patterns of speech lack expression or intonation.

Usually these patients want to be alone and show no interest to other people’s presence. Resisting changes in their routine or repeating an action over and over again is a part of their daily behavior. Autistic patients tend to flap their arms or turn in circles repetitively and with unknown meaning. In severe distress periods they engage in self-injurious actions like biting or scratching themselves, banging their heads.

Warning signs in small children are their reject for cuddling or touching, often behavioral outbursts, inexplicable attachment to some objects and the radical ignorance to many others. Autistic persons cannot maintain an actual eye-contact, they do not fear danger and show an under sensitivity towards pain. Most of these children prove an abnormal sustained play combined with uneven motor skills.

In spite of all the efforts of parents and teachers, autistic children do not respond to normal teaching methods and verbal clues. They may give the impression of being deaf in spite of their normally developed hearing sense.

Signs and symptoms of autism increase the level of severity during the teenage years but seem to decrease during adulthood.

Skin’s Worst Enemies

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

Are you aware that there are things that can make your skin unnecessarily older than it should be?

Too often, we engage in things that can be harmful to our health. These can be both conscious and unconscious actions. However, we seldom realize that these actions not only create harmful consequences to our overall health but also can also adversely affect our skin in terms of premature aging.

We love the sun and most often imagine ourselves basking in its glorious rays on some unspoiled beach somewhere on an exotic island. But don’t you know that 90 percent of wrinkles are caused by the sun? The leathery look that you hate to imagine on your skin is also caused by too much sun exposure. The sun emits ultraviolet rays that break down the skin’s underlying structures causing damage to the cell membranes and DNA. The UV rays also increase the production of an enzyme that is responsible for collagen breakdown. In order to minimize skin damage due to too much sun exposure, it is advisable to wear sunscreen. This skin care product can protect your skin from sun damage. This may not reverse any existing damage but it will help stop further wrinkling and will also provide you some protection against skin cancer.

Many smokers may not realize this but smoking is one of the culprits that can cause premature skin aging. If you value your skin and your self-image, this can be a good motivation to quit smoking for good. Smoking is a curse to your skin. Smoking can cause blood vessel constriction resulting in a limited blood flow thus depriving the skin of the much-needed oxygen to stay healthy. When smoking, toxins are introduced into the body causing a high increase in free radicals and intensifying the damage these render to the skin. The free radicals are responsible for accelerating the aging process.

Too much alcohol consumption can also leave the skin dry and older looking. This is because of the dehydrating action of alcoholic beverages to the body. Frequent consumption can leave the skin irreparably damaged. If you are concerned about your overall health, try to limit alcohol intake. Women should take no more than 1 drink a day while no more than 2 for men. You can drink plenty of water throughout the day to counterbalance the dehydration process. Skin care is important in order to maintain that warm and healthy glow. If you have dry skin, take shorter showers and adjust the water temperature to lukewarm. Avoid prolonged exposure to hot water since high water temperature strips oil from the skin replacing it with water. As water evaporates, it leaves the skin dry.

Lack of sleep can also cause damage to your skin. Collagen and keratin are regenerated during sleep. Collagen and keratin are the proteins in the top layer of the skin that provide elasticity. If you are sleep deprived, your skin can become dull and the dark circles under your eyes may worsen.

Stress can make your skin look pale and drawn. Skin breakouts can also occur especially when you are under stress. Take a break from your stressful life like going for a vacation and engaging yourself in some relaxation techniques like yoga. These can be beneficial to both your health and your skin.

By avoiding all the skin enemies, you will be able to enjoy a vibrant, healthy skin that will contribute to your overall beauty and wellness.
