Causes of Gapped Teeth

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

The fraenum or fraenulum that attaches the top lip to the upper portion of the gum is called the maxillary labial fraenum. An abnormally low maxillary labial fraenum is the most common cause of gapped front teeth in the upper jaw. This gap is called maxillary diastema. The abnormal fraenum is attached so low on the gum-line that it props apart the two front teeth.

It is important to close your gap because a tooth gap can cause tooth misalignment. A large tooth gap between the front teeth could leave insufficient room for the ones next to the front teeth. This may cause tooth displacement and problems with the bite. Another reason is self-consciousness. Some people may feel embarrassed, and reluctant to smile with parted lips.

Gapped front teeth in the upper jaw close by themselves in many cases. Generally, a baby’s teeth start to erupt between six and nine months. At this early age, the front teeth could be gapped and the maxillary labial fraenum attached low to the gum. By the time the child reaches its first birthday, the fraenum has probably shortened, and the eruption of more teeth has closed any gaps. If the adult front teeth are gapped, the eruption of molars helps to crowd the front teeth together. About one in 10 children have gapped adult front teeth that don’t close by themselves.

Luckily, there is a simple solution to close your gap. Teeth Gap offers a product called teeth effects. Teeth effects are like little rubber bands that wrap around the teeth which have a gap. Since the band is stretched out it pulls your teeth inward causing the tooth gap to close.

Please visit teethgap.com teethgap.com to close your gap simply by wearing a band around your teeth.

The Way You Perform Your Workout Program

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

Workout or exercise is important both for your body and mind but have you ever considered how you’re actually doing your workout program? Whatever you do, if you are involved in a sport or activity that has potential for injury, specifically head injury, use the proper equipment no matter what anyone else tells you. For example, if you are involved with skateboarding and this is how you stay in shape, good for you! However, you need to wear protective gear such as a helmet, gloves, knee guards, etc. Most people think that something significant has to happen in order to get a head in jury. Unfortunately, that is a huge misconception. The truth is that falling one foot onto the pavement and hitting your head is enough to cause serious injury or death. This is the time to put your pride aside and think of safety first.

Remember to take a break

People who exercise need to take a break now and then. If you are actively involved in a workout regimen but you are getting ready to go on vacation for two weeks or have an extra heavy workload for your job over the next couple of weeks, instead of just stopping your routine completely during that time, just cut back. Even reducing your workout by 50% will give you the break you need but also make it much easier to get back to full speed than if you just stopped altogether.

Make yourself ready to run

Before any exercise, always remember to warm up. If you are a runner, before you go out for your actual run, take two to five minutes to jog in place to prepare. You will find that you have a better run

Cool yourself Down

Cooling down after exercise is just as important as warming up before you start. Once you have completed your workout, take five to 10 minutes to walk, or stretch to allow your body to cool down. This is very important for the muscles and joints and for the heart and lung.

Check your pulse regularly

It is a good rule to keep track of your pulse rate as you exercise,. You can pick up an inexpensive pulse measure at any local Wal-mart, K-Mart, or sporting good store. This will measure your heart rate to ensure you are staying within a healthy range. The rate is measured by counting the beats of your heart in a set amount of time, usually about 15 to 20 seconds, and then multiplying the number of beats to get your number of beats per minute. For example, if your pulse at 20 seconds were 40, since there are 60 seconds in a minute, you would take 40 times three for a total rate per minute of 120.

Exercise in the summertime

Exercising outdoors can be refreshing and fun but it can also cause problems, especially in the summertime if you do not follow some simple rules. Make sure you are drinking enough water, about 16 ounces every 30 minutes, before, during, and after exercise. Some sports drinks have special ingredients that help replenish fluids to prevent dehydration.

Weider Home Gyms - A Review of The Weider Crossbar

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

Weider, owned by ICON Health and Fitness, makes some of the best home gym equipment available. Weider home gyms have been the name in home gym fitness centers for years. There are a number of excellent pieces of equipment Weider makes to meet your fitness vision, but the Weider Crossbar is one of the best.

Overview of This Weider Home Gyms Model

It can be tough to choose between the Weider home gyms, but the Weider crossbar is easily one of the best machines out there. It is a total body workout at a very reasonable price. This machine offers you a number of different workout options including strength training, circuit training, fat burning, and cardiovascular training. It has digitally controlled resistance, and the crossbar feature allows for a full range of motion. It also comes with an impressive console and a personal trainer feature.

Benefits of This Model

Among Weider home gyms, this model has more benefits than any other. It has a full ten year warranty, which is almost unheard of in this industry. You don’t have to worry about these Weider home gyms, though, because any one of this particular model is as rugged and tough as they come.

Additionally, it has an integrated rowing machine, which can be a real plus when you just need something to help you fight off the workout boredom that inevitable overtakes every workout with a stationary machine. The overall design of the machine makes it both easy and fun to use. It is simple to assemble, and it will give you the most comfortable workout you have ever had. The personal trainer feature is amazing. It actually helps you decide how many reps you need to do and how high to set your resistance.

Overall, you can do about seventy-five exercises with this machine, which is more than most on the market.

The Weider crossbar is one of the best pieces of home gym equipment you can purchase. It has a number of great benefits, even more than I have mentioned here.

Menopause, Modern Medicine, and the Celebrity Spin

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

The medicalization of menopause is a process that has subtly been going on since the 1930’s, although it wasn’t until the 1960’s that it really picked up momentum in the public eye. This medicalization has transformed the understanding of what is a natural process, into one defined as a disease.

When you define something as a disease, then treatment becomes compulsory. And the implication is that if you don’t get treatment, or what is defined as acceptable treatment, then you are being irresponsible and negligent in your own health. Women’s menopausal experiences were for a long time dismissed as the product of their own imaginations, then later embraced by pharmaceutical companies and subverted to push their shiny new pills.

And given that HRT has been so widely taken up by women, and is still used despite its risks, it has been a successful approach by the drug companies.
The celebrity factor in promotional campaigns has been very effective at selling both the idea of menopause as a disease, and the promises of hormone replacement therapy. The FDA and their comparative bodies in most countries require that product claims are verified by appropriate and legitimate studies. But celebrities in interviews are not subject to those rules, which are designed to protect the public from misleading and harmful information. So when an actress or aging supermodel enthusiastically enacts the lines of the drug company’s scripts - that menopause is fraught with risks of diseases like alzheimers, heart attacks, colon cancer, cataracts, teeth loss, bone fractures and more (p43), in the guise of ‘education’ and personal sharing, this is seen as legitimate. There is no reference to the fees they were paid for this work, the source of their information, or its scientific validity (or lack thereof). Nor is their any mention of the fact that even initially, though there were short term benefits, the long term effects of hormone replacement therapy were not known. These celebrities were either ignorant themselves of their own status as human guinea pigs, or didn’t care.

Menopause is sold with the language of ‘decline’, as though once a woman’s estrogen ‘dried up’, so did she. She was relegated to an image of being ‘less’ than she was before, with the implication being that her value and contributions as a person were defined by something that time would take away. Unless of course she accepted the ‘help’ of the drug companies with their ‘medicine’ for her newly defined ‘disease’. So instead of being supported as her body moved into another phase of its life, women were basically told they were losing what defined them as ‘women’, as though one hormone was responsible for what made them unique individuals. As though femininity was characterized not by their own choices and expressions, but driven by hormones. And as though ‘femininity’ was equated with youth, and that once this passed, women would not enjoy their ‘best years’ as they would otherwise. And, of course, if a woman wasn’t feminine, in the appropriately defined way, then she was not really a woman…

Add to this mix the spectre of diseases that women would supposedly be in greater danger of getting, despite the fact that if scientists really knew the single cause of these diseases they would have triumphantly been marketing the cure to everyone - regardless of gender. When doctors treat alzheimers, heart attacks, colon caner, cataracts and teeth loss, they do not have one treatment for men and one for women. And in most cases, they don’t guarantee a cure with their treatments anyway. So this suggests not only do they not have the cure, but they don’t fully understand the cause. The murky waters of risk assessment are both complex and already muddied.

Women were given estrogen only in the early years of medical promotion. As studies emerged which showed women taking estrogen were more at risk of developing endometrial cancer, progestogen or progestin was added to form the combined hormone replacement therapy that became known as HRT. It was advertised for a long time as reducing the risk of heart disease, amongst other things. But in 1998, a high quality study, the HERS trial, found that in the group of 3000 older women they were studying over 4 years, who all had some form of heart disease, those on HRT were not in fact protected from heart attacks after all. And during the first year of the study, there was a higher incidence of heart attacks in the women on HRT compared with the placebo group. This was completely the opposite of what the drug companies had been advertising, based on their own observational studies, as opposed to the randomized control trial that the HERS study was.

The HERS trial was not the only one that would raise some niggly little facts about the menopause gravy train.

You Will Not Get the Flu Unless You Need To

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

The above title is my guarantee to you. Modern medicine knows that people can come in contact with the germs that cause the flu and not get it due to a great immune system. What do colds have to do with the cold weather? Why is the flu season during the cold weather? Learn why the body catches a cold and the flu, how to get over them the fastest way and how to avoid them.

If your immune system is strong enough then you will not get the flu. When a person’s health is too low, the body’s intelligence tries to strengthen it. Its job is to constantly try to make the person healthy and fit, not fat. Its only goal is the best health possible. But people have many other priorities like entertainment, fun, being sociable, making money and being admired.

So when a person’s health (immune system) drops too low, the body’s intelligence tries to force you to do something about it. A person’s health and immune system are proportional to how clean or free of toxins the body is. It is constantly trying to get rid of toxins but sometimes it gets backed up. Things that help the body detoxify are heavy sweating caused by heat or exercise, sleeping, fasting and eating a light and healthy diet. The opposite things, like lack of sleep, causes the body to get backed up with these toxins.

During cold weather people get less sunlight which means less vitamin D (which is good for the immune system). Also people sweat a lot less during cold weather so saunas can help to cause more sweating. With Bikrams Hot Yoga, you do yoga exercise in a room that is 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Americans have a tendency to over eat and under sleep especially around the holidays. I saw on the forums before thanksgiving that more people are asking what to do about a cold.

So the body’s intelligence allows you to get sick so you will do the things that you were unwilling to do, like taking off work, eating less and sleeping more. Then after the flu, you are healthier than you were before the flu. If you do not do these things then the flu can last a long time.

The quickest way to get over a cold or the flu is fasting, according to Mark Twain and I. That causes the body to detoxify at the fastest rate possible. If you can’t fast, then just eat only fruit, especially fruits high in vitamin C, until you are better. You already know about getting plenty of rest and drinking enough fluids. Finding a Friend to Share Your Fertility Experience

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

Many women are dealing with fertility and conception problems, one suggestion to help relieve the stresses faced when failing to become pregnant is to find a friend to share in your experiences. Bonding with another person in the same situation can help both of you, and perhaps one or both of you will successfully become pregnant.

The friend who you turn to during this time can be another woman who relates to the challenges of apparent infertility (or a couple if your partner is involved).Someone who has never been in this position, experiencing failure to conceive, can’t be as supportive as someone who has had this life experience.

One suggestion of a highly suitable friend for your fertility support is someone who has overcome their own conception and fertility issues. They can be a great source of advice, moral support for the times when failure occurs, and a person to share your dreams.

As with everything, there are advantages and disadvantages, it can be heart breaking if only one of you becomes pregnant while the other continues to face the uncertainty. This is perhaps the biggest reason to choose a supportive person who has already overcome their own fertility problems.

If you don’t know anyone close by, or live in less populated areas, don’t forget to turn to the internet for support. Online discussion groups and chat rooms dealing with fertility problems may be better suited. They are also great for men who may not be able to access similar services aimed toward women in their own local area. Of course, in larger cities, there are support groups where you can share your experiences, strengths and dreams as well as discuss new research and treatments. Often in these groups, you could meet a person to develop a friendship bond with to share your successes and sorrows.

We all need love and support from friends, especially in times of stress. A close relationship allows a healthy outlet for venting, mentoring and discussion. It also encourages the feeling that you are not going through this with only your partner, or completely alone if you do not have a partner.

Having a healthy outlet to share you experience, gives you perspective on your situation, you will be less likely to obsess over the failures. Sometimes, just this stress release outlet can be all that is needed for a couple to have a happy, healthy and successful pregnancy.

How Well Do You Know The Air You Breath At Home

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

A basic understanding of indoor air quality

Sick Building Syndrome (SBS)? Multiple Chemical Sensitivities )MCS)? Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC)? Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDP’s)? Radon? These are terms found only in obscure college chemistry texts, right? Well, not any more!

Recent studies (both governmental and independent) show a dramatic increase of harmful airborne pollutants in our homes. Consequently, a number of medical conditions (including cancer) can easily be attributed to this gradual deterioration of our Indoor Air Quality (IAQ).

Some questions to ponder:

• What do we (and the ones we love) breathe at home, in other words, how well do we know the air we breathe?
• What can we do to improve our indoor air quality?

Here is list of how far down the “rabbit hole” poor indoor air quality can take you and your family:

1. Dryness and irritation of eyes, nose and skin
2. Headaches
3. Fatigue
4. Shortness of Breath
5. Sinus congestion
6. Coughing and sneezing
7. Dizziness
8. Nausea
9. Asthma
10. Allergic reactions
11. Toxic shock
12. Lang disease
13. Cancer

According to the National Lung Association (NLA), lung disease claims close to 335,000 lives every year in America, making it the third leading cause of death in the U.S. So, what is causing this disease?

a) Carbon Oxides(CO,CO2)-Nitrogen Oxide (NOx)- Tobacco Smoke, Perfumes and Body Odors:
Heating systems and other appliances (stoves, furnaces, heaters, water heaters, dryers etc.) that use fossil fuel (gas, fuel or wood) can produce several combustion products. Carbon oxides interfere with the oxygen in our body. At low levels they can produce fatigue, confusion, nausea and dizziness. Prolonged exposure to Nitrogen Oxides can lead to chronic bronchitis.

b) Radon:
Radon is a naturally occurring gas that can permeate into our homes through cracks in the foundation, floor, walls and drains. The National Research Council reports that it is the second leading cause of lung cancer (15,000 to 20,000 deaths per year).

c) Dust:
Researchers found that flame retardants (Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers) in the dust in American homes are 10 times higher than anywhere in Europe. The Deca Brominated Diphenyl Ether form is especially toxic as it accumulates in the body. For that reason, it is a potent carcinogen. PBDEs are also found in carpets, drapers, auto interiors, hair dryers, computers and television sets.

d) Chloroform:
Chlorinated hot water in the kitchen sink, washing machine, dish water and shower can release chloroform, a known carcinogen

e) VOC’s:
Studies have repeatedly shown that computers release up to 47 chemicals in the form of gases, including toxic hydrocarbons from adhesives. In addition, engineered woods such as plywood, fiberboard and strand board contain adhesives that emit hydrocarbons.

f) Carcinogens:
Environment Science and Technology recently published a study that shows that the average American house contains 20 banned substances like PCB and DDT. PolyCarbonatedByphenols (PCBs) are ingredients in disinfectants, detergents and adhesives.

g) Organic Matte:r
Indoor air in also laden with fungi, molds, bacteria and other microbial contaminants from damp areas, stagnant waters, carpets and other fabric. Allergens from pet hair and pollen are present as well.

The list can be really long… Over the past 10 years poor indoor air quality has become one of the leading causes of disease in the United States. Since we spend 90% of our time indoors (according to the U.S. census) it is very important to understand that taking measures to reduce or eliminate indoor air pollution can dramatically increase quality of life. Here is a quick list of action steps:

• Eliminate or reduce chemical usage in your homes.
• Used ionized water and decloronation caps in your showers
• Use organic/ natural cleaners whenever possible
• When possible use natural wood
• Eliminate smoking
• Ensure adequate house ventilation
• e-smartliving.com/Air_Purifiers.html Get an air purifier

Remember the solution to each problem starts with acknowledgement and the first small step.

The Top 11 Benefits Of Exercise

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

So many people buy audio books to launch or improve their exercise regimen. After all, everybody wants to look great! But did you know that looking great is only one of the many benefits of exercise?

Daily exercise is a necessary ingredient in the recipe for optimum health. Here are just a few of the very important health benefits of daily exercise:

Exercise is the number one stress reliever. When we feel stressed out, our bodies produce adrenaline as part of the fight-or-flight response. But we can’t always jump on a treadmill the very second we feel stressed out. So all this stress ricochets around in the body for days on end with no outlet. Chronic stress can seriously compromise health over the long term. Exercise is the natural outlet for stress; that’s why daily exercise is so important. The stress must have an escape route.

Exercise lowers the risk for developing cardiovascular disease.

Regular exercise lowers the risk for developing diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is becoming a global epidemic. In the United States alone, 18 million people are afflicted with diabetes; and it’s on the rise in India and China. Diabetes can also lead to heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and kidney disease. It can also cause nerve damage that can lead to gangrene and amputation.

Daily exercise lowers the risk for stroke.

Exercise lowers blood pressure.

Exercising regularly strengthens the immune system. People who exercise regularly are less likely to catch colds and flu.

Exercising boosts self-confidence.

Exercise increases your overall energy level.

Regular exercise improves your mood. And who doesn’t want to feel happy?

Daily exercise even improves your sex life! You have the self-confidence to show off your birthday suit, and your higher energy level is ready for the proverbial roll in the hay!

Of course, exercising eliminates obesity, which is a high risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Daily exercise is crucial to our overall health and well-being. And there are so many types of exercise that are just plain fun, that you can enjoy right at home or in your neighborhood, and that the whole family can join in. Some examples include walking, bicycling, roller blading or yoga. And of course, there are all manner of sports: soccer, volleyball, basketball and tennis, to name a few.

You can learn even more types of exercises from audio books. Audio exercise books can help you look and feel your very best!

No matter how little time you have with an audio book you can listen:

On the go!On a trainIn the CarOn your Walkman/iPodWhile in the KitchenWhile commuting to workEven while you’re exercising!

After Gastric Bypass: Pass the Water, Hold the Ice

Monday, January 29th, 2007

I just read this conventional diet tip – and we’ve heard it before – “Burn away fat with ice cold water! Ice cold water is calorie-free and fills you up so you can eat less. Drink ice-cold water and you’ll even burn a few extra calories as your body warms it up!”

If you are in the phase of rapid weight loss or have lost quite a bit of weight you know exactly why gastric bypass patients don’t drink ice cold water - we’re already freezing – even in the heat of summer. The last thing we want to do is get colder!

People who experience the massive weight loss associated with weight loss surgery experience feeling cold for two reasons: loss of insulation and less energy generation.

Fat is a highly efficient insulator. When gastric bypass patients follow the rules: eating protein and exercising, the weight lost can only come from fat or stored energy: insulation. Less insulation increases the likelihood of feeling cold.

The second reason for feeling chilled is that the metabolic cell processes are not working as hard as when you were heavier; it takes fewer calories and less energy to maintain and move a smaller body. A heavier body must generate more energy to operate, as a result more heat is generated.

Most weight loss patients report that their body temperature regulates after their weight is stabilized, usually eighteen to twenty-four months after surgery. Patients who incorporate exercise in their weight loss program experience less chilling than patients who do not exercise.

Practice Yoga for Anger Management

Monday, January 29th, 2007

Anger is such a powerful, negative emotion. It is much similar to an amusement park ride you wish you had never tried. Many of us believe anger must just run its natural course. How could Yoga really help you with anger management?

Yoga helps develop awareness at all levels, and you must be able to identify the “triggers” to losing self-control. This technique cannot prepare you for every situation in life, but it can help you with knowing the source of your problems.

For example: Let’s say we have constant fits of anger in traffic. We have identified part of the problem. To go a bit deeper: Are we worried about being late or do we just get anxiety in crowds and traffic jams? Once we know the answer, we can work toward a solution.

Depending upon the exact source of our anger, there could be a Yoga technique to solve it. If the problem is anxiety, while in a crowd or traffic jam, we can work on Yoga breathing techniques. In some cases, we may want to work on our Yoga breathing (Pranayama) - before we get into the car.

Attending Yoga classes will bring your mental, physical, and spiritual well-being into focus. You will learn Yogic relaxation techniques at the end of most Yoga classes.

You will also become much more aware of being short of breath, chest pains, feeling over anxious, heart palpitations, and any other unhealthy side effects that can be associated with fits of anger.

Due to your new-found awareness from Yoga practice, you may start to realize that an extra cup of coffee could be “digging an early grave” for you. Yoga practitioners are much more aware of their blood pressure than people who do not practice Yoga.

Hatha Yoga practice will allow your body to vent anger. Whether you practice a Restorative Yoga style that holds postures, or you practice a flowing Vinyasa Yoga style - the unhealthy negative feelings of anger, and its side effects, can be released from your body within a Yoga class.

Anger is similar to a mental toxin, which must be purged from your body on a daily basis. Pranayama, meditation, relaxation techniques, Yoga postures, and Yoga philosophy, may also help you with the power of forgiveness.

Forgiveness allows you to let past issues go. You must let anger go, with your past, for your own heath and well-being. It is extremely unhealthy to hold onto hate and anger.

In cases of extreme anger, a Yoga class might not be enough to help you rid your body, and mind, of your angry feelings. In such a case, you should seek professional counseling. Some psychologists, and psychiatrists, recommend Yoga and counseling to their patients. Only you will truly know which method, or combination of methods, gives you the best results.
