The Three Bodies of Permanent Weight Loss

The following words may seem taboo: weight loss is easy! We have just been going about it the wrong way. Almost all of the products and diets on the market today miss key components to achieving permanent weight loss. Almost all of them only focus on the physical body- what we eat, how much we eat, when we eat and how much we exercise. If that is all that is necessary, then why have you not achieved your ideal weight? Why do diets and pills have a success rate of less than 9%? The reason is simple: there is a missing link to permanent weight loss. The physical aspect of weight loss is only one third of the equation.

There are three separate aspects that must addressed for permanent weight loss, and I like to refer to them as the three bodies. The physical body is the first. The other bodies for weight loss are the missing links; the mental body and the emotional body. The mental body includes your eating habits, orientation and perception of food. The emotional body includes the emotional reasons you eat, your attitudes toward food, and the underlying reasons you are overweight. When you work with all three bodies, it makes weight loss easy!

Imagine sitting on a stool with only one leg. How long could you balance yourself? That is what it is like attempting to lose weight while only focusing on the physical- it becomes a balancing act and a struggle to stay upright! If you find a stool that is steady with three legs, there is no balancing act at all. It is easy to comfortably sit on a balanced stool! When you have a plan that focuses on the physical, mental and emotional bodies of weight loss, you feel comfortable and secure, and your success rate dramatically increases from that of diets alone.

It is important to understand why the mental and emotional bodies play such a large role in weight loss. If making a change was as easy as simply stating the desire, we would all be ultra-healthy, thin millionaires with the perfect partners. How many times have you made a New Years resolution and had it fall through? Because we are creatures of habit, change can sometimes be difficult. When you want to make a change, sometimes it feels as though you are pushing against something inside of yourself. What you are pushing against is your unconscious (AKA subconscious) mind.

Let’s talk quickly about the unconscious mind. The unconscious works very differently than the conscious mind. For example, when you think about not being allowed to eat cheesecake, it makes the unconscious mind want to eat cheesecake even more because you are thinking about cheesecake! The unconscious does not know that cheesecake is bad because it only understands pictures and emotions, so all it sees is cheesecake! The more you think about not wanting the cheesecake, the more and more appealing it becomes until finally… well you know what happens. In order to easily avoid “bad” foods and cut down on or totally halt cravings, it is important to work with the “language” of the unconscious mind.

While I could go into much more detail, I also want to briefly discuss the emotional body of eating. There are two types of hunger- biological and emotional, and it is easy to tell the difference. Biological hunger comes on gradually and patiently, while emotional hunger comes on suddenly and feels urgent. Underlying feelings such as self-loathing, hopelessness, sadness, or worthlessness are often at the root of emotional hunger. Less intense emotions such as boredom can become a culprit as well. Whatever the underlying emotion is, eating is simply masking what is going on in your life. When you notice that you are experiencing emotional hunger, instead of asking “What should I eat?”, a better question to ask is “What is eating me?”

Start keeping a list of those feelings and thoughts and find a way to resolve them! There are so many modalities that can help you let go of negative emotions and beliefs, such as psychotherapy, hypnosis, Emotional Freedom Techniques, Time Empowerment (my personal favorite), and Body Alignment, just to name a few. In my personal practice, I find that having multiple modalities in my toolbox greatly increases the amount of change I can help a client achieve. A Champion Bodybuilder - Do You Have What It Takes?

My career began in the eighties. I never found myself going to a health club, much less taking time for myself, until I was in college. I had to occupy my time between classes somehow, so one day I went to the gym. I grew up without self-discipline, confidence, or faith in myself. As a youth, I was overweight and short. In my late teens, during the first few years of my career and with the help of a few close friends, I was fortunate to have discovered three very important things about myself that changed me forever: hope, belief, and motivation.

Hope

I did not set out to be a champion bodybuilder. Nor did I really want to. But I did
hoped I could get in better shape with some hard work.

Belief

When I first stepped into a health club, it was frightening. I had two friends that
exercised with me on a regular basis. The confidence they had in me started
positively affecting my attitude and fear of failure. After awhile, I noticed those fears
I had about myself slowly began to disappear.

Motivation

As I developed more confidence, I started to realize how important it was for this
change to come from the “inside out.” Looking better, having more energy and
getting physically stronger are great things to experience, but what I am most
grateful for is that my heart was also changing. I felt better about myself. I had
purpose and I was doing something positive. That heart-felt motivation became the
glue that has kept me going for all these years. No matter what you do in life, if you
have purpose, and if it is good for others, life will be rewarding.

Here are a few principles I have learned along the way may help you become a true
bodybuilding champion.

Principle #1: Be Sold Out! Whether you are a competitive bodybuilder or just do it as
a hobby to stay in shape – have the attitude that you are going to exercise and eat
right for life.

Principle#2: Ask not, have not! If you do not know something, ask a man/women
that you feel does. Knowledge is powerful.

Principle #3: Leave your ego at the door! Your ego is your biggest competitor by far.
The reality is, it’s NOT all about you. If you think it is, you will never be a Champion
for any length of time.

Principle #4: Work-out smart not hard! Bodybuilding is about efficiency, not effort.

Principle #5: Know when to stop. If you need time off, take it. If you do not want to
compete anymore, but are afraid not to, then you are doing it for the wrong
reasons.

Principle #5: Have fun. Don’t be wound up like a clock all the time. Relax!

Principle #6: Put variety in your workouts. Never think your workout program is the
best. Change it up every three months.

Principle #7: Only compete once a year! If you are a competitive bodybuilder only
compete in one show a year. If you do more, you will burn out and lose valuable
muscle.

Principle #8: Never compete for a trophy! If you are a trophy hunter you will never
be a true champion. True champions do it for the journey.

Naturally Increase Your Creativity and Intuition Using Alpha Meditation

In order to understand how alpha meditation can help improve your creativity, it is important to start by understanding what binaural beats and brainwave entrainment are.

Brainwave entrainment is the use of some external stimulus, usually different sounds that a person will hear with stereo headphones, to induce a certain level of brain wave activity. When a person’s brainwave activity is artificially altered by these means, it will subtly shift their awareness and perception.

Using binaural beats is a common and effective method of brainwave entrainment. In order for the binaural beats to be effective, a person must be using stereo headphones so that they can hear a different sound in each ear.

Most of the time, the binaural beats will be embedded underneath the layers of tracks on a song, usually soothing ambient music or soundscapes, so that the person listening can focus on the music and not on the frequencies they are hearing. If you either find or create effective binaural beat audios to listen to in stereo heaphones, the frequencies should blend perfectly into the background, and you should not be able to consciously notice them unless you really try to isolate them.

Binaural beats are the most effective this way, when they are loud enough to still have an effect on your brainwave activity but quiet enough that you do not notice them. Depending on the difference between the two frequencies you decide to use, you can entrain any desired brainwave state and state of mind.

The ideal brainwave frequency for alpha meditation is about 9-10hz, so if we wanted to create a set of binaural beats that could be used to artificially induce this specific frequency, we could play 110hz in the left ear and 120hz in the right ear.

To any person who is hearing these different frequencies in each ear, their brain will act like a tuning fork and it will lock on to the difference between the two frequencies, which in this case would be 10hz.

‘Alpha’ is the name that we use for the range of brainwave frequencies from around 8hz-13hz. We go through the alpha brainwave state many times during a 24-hour period, and it is usually we are in a light sleep and are dreaming. However, this state can also be achieved by listening to soothing music, preferably music with alpha binaural beat already embedded in the layers, and simply lying down and resting. When a person reaches this alpha state while they are still conscious, their imagination will be highly active and they can see very vivid imagery, like an intense dream.

After practicing this daily for a short while, even just a week or two, a person’s intuitive creativity will naturally be higher and coming up with new ideas will seem easier.

Remaining in the intuitive alpha state for extended periods is the key to increasing your creativity, because this frequency stimulates the right-side creative portion of the human brain. After doing daily alpha meditation and staying in the alpha state for 30 minutes or more per day, your creative visualization capabilities will markedly increase, and it is this creative visualization that can help you achieve any outcome you desire.

If you are interested in pursuing alpha meditation, you can do a number of things. While it does not require music with alpha binaural beats, this is highly recommended because your brain will automatically lock on to the alpha frequency.

You can go to your local music store and look for CDs on ‘alpha mediation’ or ‘alpha relaxation,’ or you can also look online at places like iTunes. Or if you would like to have full control over your alpha meditation experience, you can embed any song of your choosing with binaural beats using special audio software.

Creating your own binaural beat audios will give you full control over your meditation experience, and you can experiment with different frequencies around the 7-10 hz area to see which ones give you the biggest boost in intuition and creativity.

The word has its roots in the ancient Chinese culture and philosophy. Chi refers to the natural energy that pervades the entire universe. It is the life force of all living beings as well. It has metaphysical connotations. It is at once supernatural and paranormal.

There are quite a few terms or expressions that represent chi in various countries or regions. In India, for instance, it is ‘prana’ (breath) and ‘therapeutic touch’ and in Japan it is ki, ‘the life force energy’. Reiki, a Japanese healing technique, uses the ‘spiritually guided life force energy’ for curing illnesses.

Some of the earliest recorded philosophies in China mention the ‘metaphysical energy’ that flows through and sustains all beings under the sun. An Austrian immigrant to the United States, Dr. Wilhelm Reich, propounded the theory that what he termed as ‘orgone energy’ is the cause of everything in the entire universe. According to him, orgone energy is the same as ‘bio-energy’ or ‘life energy’ that fills all living beings.

While some ancient Chinese philosophies describe chi to be a separate force unconnected with matter, some others debate whether chi arises from matter or it is the other way round. There is yet another philosophy supported by Buddhists and Taoists that matter after all is an illusion. Without using the word chi, several philosophers in India go a little further in stating that a primordial force or energy creates, sustains and destroys all matter, in regular cycles. All matter is an illusion of the reality that is the primordial energy.

One of the principal concepts pertaining to chi (or qi) is that of harmony, be it in the state of the universe or in the life of an individual. Earthquakes, tornadoes, typhoons, tsunamis, cyclones or the other natural calamities that occur on land or at sea from time to time result from the disturbance in the chi - harmony. The same chi also engineers cosmic troubles in the astrosphere.

Your mental or physical health is also in direct relation to this harmony. When there is imbalance or disharmony, your health suffers. You have to draw on the energy resource of chi to restore the lost equilibrium in order to get back the lost health. Your mind or body will then return to its normal state of good health. Traditional Chinese medicine uses various therapeutic techniques like acupuncture, herbal medicines, special diets, martial arts and so on, for correcting the imbalances in the circulation or flow of chi through its channels. Thereby, it restores the health of the patients. Reiki practitioners say that, when the life force energy is low, illness occurs and their healing techniques raise the energy level for the illness to disappear. They use the ‘therapeutic touch’ to heal their patients.

According to Feng Shui, the flow chi in the spaces that you and your belongings occupy influences your health, wealth, energy levels and many other things of your life, and even your luck. This traditional Chinese art gives clear instructions regarding where and how your things should be placed in your house, what color suits or brings luck to you etc, as their proper arrangement will regulate the flow of chi to your benefit.

Preparing Food Safely

Most conscientious cooks use common sense when preparing or storing food. But common sense in food preparation doesn’t just happen -it is learned. This learning happens and when we forget where we learned it, we call it common sense.

Here are just a few pointers to refresh and reinforce your common sense as you are preparing your current meal or storing it for future use.

- Food safety actually starts with your excursion to the supermarket. Pick up the packaged or canned foods. Do the cans have dents? Don’t buy them. Is the jar cracked? Leave it. Does the lid seem loose or bulging? Pick up another. Look for any expiration dates on the labels -they are there for a reason. Never buy outdated food. Check the “use by” or “sell by” date on dairy products and pick the ones that will stay fresh the longest.

- After grocery shopping, put food into the refrigerator or freezer right away. Make sure to set the refrigerator temperature is set to 40 deg F and the freezer is set to 0 F. Refrigerate or freeze perishables, prepared foods, and leftovers within 2 hours. Raw meat, poultry, and seafood should be placed in containers to prevent their juices from dripping on other foods. Raw juices could possibly harbor harmful bacteria. Eggs always go in the refrigerator.

- Always cook food thoroughly until it is done. Red meat should turn brown inside. Chicken, when poked with a fork, should have clear juices. Fish, on the other hand, when poked with a fork, should flake. Cooked egg whites and yolks should be firm and not run. Be sure to use a food thermometer to check the internal temperatures of your poultry, meat, and other foods. Leave it in long enough to ensure an accurate reading.

- Wash your hands and cooking surfaces frequently. Bacteria can be spread quickly so this will ensure that it will not take hold and grow onto your food. A solution of one teaspoon of bleach in one quart of water is all that is needed to sanitize washed surfaces and utensils.

- Cooked foods should definitely not be left standing in the kitchen counter or table for more than two hours. Bacteria tends to grow in temperatures between 40 and 140 deg F.

- Foods that have been cooked ahead and cooled should be reheated to at least 165 deg F. (This just so happens to be one of the most overlooked areas in food prep).

- Chill Leftover Food Promptly. Place food in the refrigerator and don’t overfill. The cold air needs to circulate freely to keep food safe. Divide the food and place in shallow containers. Think about labeling some of these containers so you don’t lose track of how long they’ve been refrigerating.

These are just a few pointers that you already know, but need to keep remembering. If you follow these basics you will avoid most of the ‘disasters in waiting’!
