Advancement in Hair Transplantation

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

A standard hair transplantation procedure involves the removal of donor strip of hair from the back of the head from where the follicular unit grafts are dissected under a microscope. These grafts are then preserved in saline and are then transplanted on a bald patch on the crown area of the scalp.

Given the time consuming and tedious nature of this procedure, a hair transplant surgeon is often able to transplant only about 500 to 600 follicular unit grafts per day. However, thanks to the recent hair transplant advances, this technique is often replaced by the follicular unit extraction (FUE). The cost per graft of FUE is typically twice the cost of the standard follicular unit hair transplant procedure discussed above but it is comparatively faster and minimally invasive.

Some hair transplant advances

In a typical FUE procedure a small round punch is made in the donor area to directly extract 1, 2, 3 and 4 hair follicular unit grafts. The follicular units extracted using this process is typically referred to as “blunt dissection” where a punch is made to envelope the entire follicular unit separating it from the surrounding soft tissues.

Once the underlying follicular unit is separated from the surrounding tissues, it is easily extracted using a small forceps. The small holes left behind after the follicular unit extraction gradually heal over the next few days and are not detectable to the naked eye once the patient’s hair grows out. The healing time is much less than the donor strip extraction procedure.

While the FUE procedure has been adopted by most hair transplant clinics, the standard strip excision method is still the most popular hair transplant procedure because it is more economical than the FUE.

Moreover, due to some recent hair transplant advances such as the use of trichophytic closure technique, the linear donor scar created by the strip excision procedure is now often rendered almost undetectable to the naked eye. This advancement in the hair transplantation technique has made FUE procedure relatively less appealing.

Hair transplantation research

Besides the hair transplant advances in the transplantation procedures, a lot of research is also underway to clone the hair. If the hair transplantation research is successful it will be possible to make several copies of donor hair in the laboratory. The application of this technique would be used in the form of hair transplantation. In the traditional procedures, the biggest limitation is often the donor which is not able to meet required density. However, hair cloning promises to overcome this problem by having the amount of hair required to be grown in a laboratory from a single donor hair and then implanting it into the scalp.

Hair transplantation research for cloning is very difficult and there are many hurdles that have to be overcome regarding the safety and cosmetic characteristics of the cloned hair. Some hair transplantation research has also provided breakthrough for some hair loss medication like Dutasteride.

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) Information

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is a major surgical procedure for men and women generally in good shape and health but who have large fat deposits around their abdomen or have and excess of loose skin. Abdominoplasty can reduce protruding abdominal fat but it does leave a lengthy, permanent, sometimes visible scar that runs the length of the hipbones. Also during abdominoplasty, the vertical muscles of the abdomen are tightened.

Often, people who have abdominoplasty surgery are women who don’t intend to bear more children and whose previous pregnancies stretched their abdominal muscles or people suffering from obesity whose skin elasticity has diminished.

During the procedure patients are either given a sedative and local anesthesia or general anesthesia. An incision is made between the hipbones and around the belly button. Then the skin is separated from the abdominal wall and lifted over the vertical abdominal muscles. These muscles are then sewn together to tighten them. Next the skin is stretched down and flattened and the remaining skin left over the incision is cut away and the skin flap is sewn into its new place.

After surgery, supportive garments should be worn and after three weeks all sutures will have been removed. Post-operative exercise is encouraged to tone the muscles and healthy lifestyle and diet is encouraged to maintain the results.

While abdominoplasty leaves a significant scar, it doesn’t show under most clothes and under some swim suits and most people are happy with the procedure because they look better, feel healthier, and are in less pain.

Tips For Panic Attacks - What To Do and Why

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

What exactly is a panic attack, and more importantly how do you know you are having one? Normal anxiety is a feeling we all experience many times during our lives, especially when we find ourselves in a tense situation, for example when sitting a major exam, delivering a speech to a room full of strangers, getting married, or simply going on a blind date. When we feel anxious uneasy or fearful for an explainable logical reason then this is just a normal and rational response, and nothing to be worried about. If however we feel unexpected surges of overwhelming dread that come without warning and for no apparent reason, it is no longer regular anxiety but a Panic Attack.

If you do feel you are having a panic attack, what can you do? The following tips for Panic Attacks can help:

Firstly, correct your breathing. Often the physical symptoms of anxiety and panic may be triggered by hyperventilation or rapid breathing. This raises oxygen levels and reduces the amount of carbon dioxide in the blood. To this end it is important to learn to breathe from the diaphragm, and not from the chest. In addition you must lengthen exhalation to relax. If you lengthen inhalation instead you become more stimulated which will heighten the effects of a Panic Attack.

It may sound overly simple, but one way to deal with a panic attack is to be active and do something. One of the key methods to control panic and anxiety is to occupy the mind, so it is critical to do something, no matter what it is. For example something as simple as splashing your face with cold water, taking exercise, or seeking out company may alleviate the symptoms.

Similarly, listening to your favourite music or watching a television may help, even eating or drinking something from the fridge, anything which can divert the mind from the source of the panic.

It may also help to talk to someone, but during a panic attack try talking to someone about something other than your anxiety. It may not help to discuss the panic attack when it is occurring, the attack may not subside so quickly if you are talking about the problem. Again the purpose is to distract the mind.

What actually causes panic attacks? Panic Attacks occur when a level of anxiety is reached which causes the Adrenalin to produce severe symptoms which reach a peak in just a matter of minutes. The peak of an attack can range anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes, but the symptoms may last a little longer. Panic Attacks belong to a group of anxiety disorder, like panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and agoraphobia.

Panic Attacks are generally a sign of one of these underlying anxiety disorders which can generally be treated successfully with or without having to go through medication or costly therapy. Critically panic attacks are not a sign of illness, and sufferers should not assume they are. The way to cure panic is to find and eliminate the causes that trigger Panic Attacks.

Getting Rid of Cold Sores This Quick and Easy Way?

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Is getting rid of cold sores an acute desire for you? If so, by the time you are done reading this article, you will know exactly how to get rid of cold sores in your life.

If getting rid of cold sores for you means healing a current cold sore fast, or preventing cold sores before they can occur, this article will help. The key to success is deactivating the herpes virus. Keeping it in this dormant stage will prevent future cold sores.

The herpes simplex virus normally is latent. It is hiding in the nerve cells near where the outbreaks occur. No matter what you hear there is no proven way to actually remove this herpes virus from your body. Fact is, even if there was a way, you would quickly catch it again. Why? Because nearly everyone in the world - estimated around 91% - carries the cold sore virus.

Getting rid of cold sores is really an easy three-step process. 1. Destroy as much virus as possible. 2. Make the cold sore area uncomfortable for the virus. 3. Heal the cold sore damage as quickly as possible.

Alcohol is the universal germ killer. It can sting but is ideal for destroying cold sore virus. If you use bottled alcohol, apply with a cotton ball. Pre-packaged alcohol swabs are available and most convenient. One down side - alcohol has to be applied frequently. A cold sore treatment that will kill viruses but lasts longer between applications, are oils such as oregano or garlic oil. Both work great, feel good and last a long time. Oregano smells better in public.

Making the area unfriendly to the cold sore virus is as simple as applying ice or any cold object. The herpes virus hates cold and will retreat from it.

Finally, applying some fresh (from a plant leaf) Aloe Vera gel on the sore will speed healing dramatically.

Getting rid of cold sores for good will take an on-going focus on your part. Here are a couple of ways other cold sore sufferers have used to prevent cold sores from taking place.

Truth be told, many folks get rid of cold sores merely by adding a good vitamin-mineral supplement to their daily diet. First, this helps boost your immune system giving you greater resistance to viral type illnesses. Second, minerals such as calcium, magnesium and zinc help keep your body more alkaline. This is especially important under stress conditions that normally turn the body acid. The cold sore virus cannot get any traction in an alkaline environment.

If you have had more than one cold sore event in your life, you are probably aware of these early symptoms. Just before the cold sore appears, the target area will start to feel uncomfortable - itching, burning, dryness. This may last two hours to two days. You can stop the cold sore in its tracks. Just apply the right cold sore treatment during this time. The simplest and most convenient is to apply ice quickly and often. You will either delay the cold sore or send the herpes virus back into hibernation.

There are a variety of cold sore remedies available at your local stores. For the most part, these are comfort remedies. They have not been proven to shorten the cold sore event by more than a few days. But, comfort is important too. Look for products with a numbing agent for reducing pain, and an anti-bacterial to prevent a secondary bacterial infection.

Getting rid of cold sores can be as simple as taking a daily vitamin supplement. Or it may take more effort by following an alkaline enhancing diet or trying different topical treatments.

You are different. You are unique. Finding the correct cold sore remedy that will work best for you may take a little trial and error on your part. But if you are determined, and start applying the suggestions mentioned here, you may soon find yourself permanently getting rid of cold sores.

Natural Alternatives for Reducing Pain

Friday, May 30th, 2008

I see many people who deal with daily pain in my practice. Many resign themselves to taking pain medications such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve). Others with more serious pain end up getting prescriptions for narcotics or having procedures such as epidural injections or even surgery.

Fortunately I am in a position to recommend a number of non-medical alternatives for controlling pain. Many of these are available at the local health food store. Others require a visit to a healthcare practitioner. If you are suffering from pain here are a few things you can do.

First of all you need to determine whether you are experiencing acute or chronic pain. Acute pain feels sharper in quality than chronic or what we sometimes call subacute pain. Many times acute pain is associated with inflammation. The tissues may feel slightly swollen and can be very tender to the touch. With subacute pain the tissues feel tighter and can restrict movement.

If the pain is moderate to severe and feels sharper in quality, (acute pain) then icing the painful area will help. Most people use the gel type ice packs. These are nice because they only last for about 20 minutes which is all you need. A good protocol to follow is to ice for 20 minutes then remove the ice for 40 minutes. One of the best times to use ice is before bedtime as the tissues tend to become inflamed over night. This will cause more intense pain in the morning.

Sometimes the inflammation comes and goes over a period of weeks. This is due to the damage in the soft tissues such as in your neck and back. When you go about your day the tissues absorb a certain amount of force. If the force exceeds what the damaged tissues can handle the tissue becomes inflamed. Many of my patients prematurely used heat in this case. If you heat up tissues that are inflamed you will prolong the inflammation. Using ice is a safer bet.

Another thing you can do for pain is to begin a regimen of natural anti-inflammatory substances. Many people do not know about these. There are a number of natural substances that have an anti-inflammatory effect. You can get these at your local health food store.

The natural anti-inflammatory substances include:

Bioflavinoids — these come from fruits and vegetables. There are

many bioflavinoid compounds and many natural

anti-inflammatory products contain them.

Tumeric and Ginger are commonly used spices and are sold in

capsule form in health food stores.

Boswellia Serrata is an Indian herb with anti-inflammatory properties.

Trypsin and Chymotrypsin are digestive enzymes usually taken for

digestive problems but also exhibit an anti-inflammatory effect.

The dose will depend on the product. You can consult with the store or a natural physician to determine the dose. Nutritional substances are much safer to take than even over the counter medications so side effects are at a minimum.

Lastly, some healthcare practitioners use electrical modalities such as TENS to help control pain. TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Basically TENS bombards the spinal cord with electrical signals that interfere with pain. The research on TENS is mixed with regard to acute pain. In my experience with TENS I have seen both good and poor results. A lot has to do with setting up the unit properly. After using it awhile the body can adapt to the stimulus so the unit has to be adjusted regularly.

Other electrical modalities used for pain include interferential current and microcurrent. These are administered by practitioners such as chiropractors or physical therapists. Both help the tissues heal by either reducing inflammation or by stimulating the production of proteins in the cells.

One of the newer therapies used to decrease pain and stimulate healing is low level laser light therapy. The actual mechanism of healing is not known but clinical research shows that it can be effective in reducing pain and accelerating healing.

Acupuncture can also be effective in reducing muscle pain. Acupuncture is done by inserting needles or using mild electrical stimulation at specific points on the body. The points are located along meridians which are channels through which the life force flows. No one knows exactly how acupuncture works but many studies have been done that support its pain reducing effects.

There are a number of mind-body techniques that can help reduce or even eliminate pain. Meditation and guided imagery are two popular techniques that are used to reduce pain. In guided imagery you get into a relaxed state and then create an image of your pain or illness. You then imagine the image dissolving and yourself in a healthy pain-free state. Guided imagery may take a bit of practice but the results are well worth the effort.

There are many ways to treat pain aside from the familiar pills and injections that carry with them a significant risk of side effects. I always recommend trying the safer alternative methods first. In most cases the pain can be successfully treated without the dangers of medications.

Seroquel Side Effects - Seroquel Lawyer & Seroquel Attorney Lawsuits

Friday, May 30th, 2008

The FDA approved the drug Seroquel in 1997 for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar mania. Schizophrenia is not a multiple personality disorder, as it is commonly portrayed by the media, but rather a mental disease that causes people to fail to perceive reality properly. Schizophrenia can cause hallucinations, delusions and disorganized thinking processes. Bipolar mania is a mood disorder that is characterized as having extreme emotions. Usually these extreme emotions involve hyperactivity, increased sexual desires, increased irritability and sometimes euphoria.

Recently this drug has been linked to potentially fatal conditions such as diabetes and pancreatitis. If these conditions are left unchecked, they can sometimes lead to catastrophic problems such as ketoacidosis, coma and potentially death.

Seroquel is also known to cause an increase in appetite which ultimately causes the patient to gain weight. Weight gain can be an early sign of diabetes, hyperglycemia or other dangerous conditions. Unfortunately, Seroquel users have found it difficult (if not impossible) to lose the weight after it’s been put on after using the drug.

If you or a loved one has been faced with the devastating side effects of the drug Seroquel, it’s very important that you have someone to turn to for help. Seroquel induced diabetes or pancreatitis victims DO have legal rights. A qualified defective drug attorney can help you receive compensation for your injuries and fight for your rights. It’s time drug makers like AstraZeneca are held accountable for their actions. Please contact an attorney as soon as possible.

Health by Massage Therapy - Benefits of Human Touch

Friday, May 30th, 2008

In recent years because patients have been dissatisfied with current conventional methods of medical treatments, they have turned to contemporary forms of treatment to relieve back pain. One such form of contemporary treatment being used is Massage Therapy.

Massage Therapy, the art of human touch, has been around since the beginning of humankind. Couples, friends, and parents have always used human touch to console and ease the anxieties, or pain of loved ones. However, this art has become noticed by the medical world, and some doctors are recommending their patients to seek this alternative form of treatment when conventional methods are no longer aiding their patient’s recovery.

A question a Professional would propose to any person seeking this contemporary form of medical treatment, “Does Massage Therapy have any statistical significance in aiding back pain relief?” Case studies have been performed, and though they have not found any statistical significance relating to Massage Therapy and its affect on back pain, they have recognized that to some degree Massage Therapy has improved the physical symptoms of patients, and the quality of life they experience. In one case study, massage therapy was effective in relieving subacute and chronic back pain.

How many treatments does it take for a person to feel the benefits of Massage Therapy, you might ask? This depends strictly upon the individual requesting the service, their description of symptoms, and their massage professional. Some massage therapists will begin with an interview asking their client to describe their current physical symptoms, and organize a four week plan, with a visit a week, touching each area of tension. Other therapists may ask where it hurts, recognize which muscle is causing the discomfort, and proceed with the treatment and he/she is out in thirty minutes.

In conclusion, Massage Therapy, though not statistically significant, has been shown to reduce the level of pain in a person’s back, and when traditional medical treatments are no longer relieving the symptoms. Some medical professionals are advising their patients to seek avenues of alternative contemporary styles in reducing back pain. Massage Therapy is one treatment they are recommending.

Effective Acne Treatment

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Millions of people around the world suffer from acne on a daily basis. It isn’t just a problem that strikes teenagers; adult acne is a concern for both men and women of virtually any age. This widespread occurrence makes it very difficult to pinpoint the exact causes of acne, however, it is known to be a hormone related problem and is therefore more common in people with higher hormone levels. The severity of acne can vary depending on the patient but left untreated it can leave nasty scars that will remain for a long period of time.

Be careful about which moisturizers and cleaners you use on your skin. If you already suffer from acne this is especially important. Choose a mild cleanser and apply it twice a day to the acne infected areas. There are several specialist cleansers ideally suited to this task.

Tempting though it may be you should try to avoid squeezing and picking. This can result in open sores that can easily become infected. By picking acne there is a good chance you will make it last longer. Ordinarily you can expect an acne pimple to last a week or more.

As well as a healthy diet and lots of water there are also vitamin and nutritional supplements you can take that will also assist in beating acne. Vitamins A, C and E are particularly helpful and combining these with zinc orotate is sure to have an effect.

A bad diet is proven to cause acne, so sticking to a well balanced diet will certainly help clear up or prevent acne. Garlic and onions can be particularly helpful because these contain sulphur. Drinking lots of purified water can also be very effective, rehydrating the skin and improving your glands.

Transfer Factor: The Key to Immune System Memory

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Transfer Factor represents one of the most exciting advancements in immune system health. Transfer factors are tiny molecules of protein, which are produced by immune cells called T-cells. Transfer factor is based on the foundation that key immune information can be transferred from one cell to another. These cells can then teach our immune system to better defend our health.

Highly Purified and Rigorously Tested
immunewellness.com/colostrum.htm Colostrum from healthy, organically fed cows is purified and filtered to provide a mixture of pure transfer factor molecules. Numerous rigorous techniques including further purification and isolation result in pure transfer factor. People who are lactose intolerant or who have milk allergies of any kind need not be concerned, as all lactose and milk proteins are removed during the extraction and concentration process.

Important Note About Mad Cow Disease (BSE) and Transfer Factor
Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is a progressive brain disorder in cattle that results from an infecting agent. This agent is a modified form of a normal cell surface component known as prion protein. This transmission of BSE between cattle is the result of feeding infected animal protein to otherwise health cows.

You can rest assured that the cattle in question are isolated exclusively for the processing of transfer factor. None of them have ever been fed any animal protein. Additionally, the protein molecules used in transfer factor are a fraction of the size of BSE prions, and the advanced filtration process used to extract transfer factor molecules eliminates any potential contamination of the product.

Good Food Good Health - Elderflower

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Hi everyone, today I have a great summer drink rich in Antioxidants which really are good for you, yes its the common elderflower. The flowers are now in season and plentiful, and it is really easy to harvest and produce yourself.

The elderflower has been well known through the centuries for its high vitamin C content, antioxidant and healing properties, and because of this is today one of the top selling natural summer cordials.

Drinking a glass of cordial daily is very refreshing and will help to improve your health, and it is not just the flowers that are good for you but also the berries when made into wine have equal beneficial properties.

We are all well aware now just how important anti oxidants and vitamin C are, and I do not mean only the ladies thinking about their skin and premature aging, but then maybe that is why through the ages women have always made and drank elderflower cordials and tea ritually, and is a staple product of the Women’s Institute along with jams.

Antioxidants are needed to help reduce the production of ‘free radicals’ (highly re-active and unstable molecules which contain atoms with unpaired electrons) in the body, high fat diets attribute to ‘free radicals’, but they are also produced naturally and especially in people who exercise heavily, attacking cells leading to long term damage and a higher risk of cancer.

Studies have shown that taking antioxidants such as vitamin C before eating high fat foods, reduces the damage greatly to the arteries.

The elderflower is well in bloom now and can be found in most hedgerows and roadsides, scrubland and gardens alike, and to many gardeners is a nuisance as it grows almost anywhere in a very short time to a considerable size.

The elder has acquired the nickname of ‘Nature’s Medicine Chest’, as its healing properties have been used for a very wide and varied range of problems from Rheumatism, hay fever, coughs and colds, asthma and influenza.

The elderflower is only in bloom for about six weeks, from the end of May to the beginning of July, but it is best picked now while the flowers are fresh and white and before they turn creamy brown.

I remember making this with my grandma every year, from collecting the flowers and berries to all the smells associated with this. I still have the hand written recipe of this and others by grandma, although I think some of these recipes are probably illegal to make at home now, like the marrow rum, I will have to check up on this at a later date. Ted is intrigued as to why you have to hang the marrow in a stocking for this recipe, men!

The recipe to make 1.5 litres of Elderflower cordial is below, which you dilute to taste, is easy and inexpensive, and is great served with fizzy water and ice. Perfect for the summer.

Ingredients you need - 20 heads of elderflower, 1.8kg granulated sugar, 1.2 litres of water, 2 lemons and 75g citric acid. Preparation time takes 20 minutes, plus overnight infusing and 5 minutes cooking. Method. Shake the flowers to expel any insects and place in large bowl.
Put sugar in pan with water and bring to boil, stirring until sugar has dissolved. Pare zest off lemons in wide strips and place in bowl with elderflower. Slice lemons discarding ends and add slices to bowl. Pour over boiling syrup and stir in citric acid. Cover with cloth and leave for 24 hours at room temperature. The next day strain cordial through a muslin (or a new boil washed J cloth or similar) and pour into thoroughly cleaned plastic or glass bottles with screw on lids, and that is it.

There, that is not that difficult is it, and it tastes so good served with a sprig of mint and a slice of strawberry with fizzy water and ice, friends will not believe you have made it yourself.

The elder is also used as a natural garden insecticide, by crushing up and bruising the foul smelling leaves you can leave them around young plants to deter aphids and caterpillars. Obviously as they dry out and the smell disappears they need to be replaced.

Farmers used to hang bunches of elderflower above their horses before insecticides were used to rid flies, and dairy farmers used it as they thought it had properties to stop the milk from turning sour. People used to wear a small sprig to keep midges away.

The elder has been closely entwined with pagans through the years to summon spirits, with twigs woven into head-dresses to enable the wearer to see spirits and undo evil spells! The mind boggles.

On the Isle of Man, every cottage has an elder growing outside its front door to ward off witches even to this day. In other parts of the country, people would never burn elder wood as it was said a member of the family would die. It was truly a revered plant.

The great thing about elderflower is that it tastes delicious, is highly refreshing and a good provider of vitamin C - an antioxidant, so why not try making your own or buy a good reputable manufactured cordial or juice and start getting the benefits for your good health now.
