LASIK Side Effects
LASIK vision correction procedure improves your eyesight, but as with most other surgeries, it too has certain side effects. Though rare, you should be aware of the side effects, if you are considering LASIK eye surgery. Certain variable factors are responsible for the final result of the surgery:
- Hydration of the cornea during the surgery.
- The laser and its calibration.
- The conditions inside the laser room, vis-à-vis, temperature and humidity.
- How your eye responds to the healing.
In case these variable factors result in under-correction, a further procedure can be carried out, but after three months, when the results have stabilized. In case of over correction, chances are, though very rare, that your myopic condition may change to hyperopic condition. This could be corrected by a further surgery.
Another side effect of LASIK eye surgery, though occasional, is the development of astigmatism, where there was none, before surgery. Though not known why it occurs, it could be a combination of factors, such as, the uniformity of the laser beam and alignment of the patient’s eye. This astigmatism is small, but if the surface of the cornea is left uneven, an uneven astigmatism may occur, impairing sharpness of your vision. This will require you to use glasses, or gas permeable contact lenses, for the best possible vision.
In less than 5% persons undergoing LASIK eye surgery, there is a loss of best-corrected visual acuity. There is an impression with people that after the LASIK procedure, they could achieve the best vision they had before the operation, by using glasses or contact lenses. If you had a vision of 20/400 without contact lenses or glasses, and had a 20/20 vision with them, after LASIK surgery, your unaided vision could improve to 20/30 and with contact lenses or glasses, you could have a perfect 20/20 vision, but with a newer prescription of thinner glasses.
However, in the above case, if you are unable to improve your post-operative 20/30 vision to a 20/20 vision with glasses or contact lenses, then you have lost the best-corrected vision acuity.
The other side effects of LASIK eye surgery are infection of the eye, which can be eliminated with anti-biotic eye drops, after surgery. You may feel temporary irritation in the eye - your eye could feel scratchy after the surgery. This irritation could be relieved with the eye drops you would use after the LASIK surgery.
Though serious side effects of LASIK are rare, you should consider them before deciding to go for the procedure. It is best to check with your doctor before undergoing LASIK eye surgery.
